July 18 ? Microsoft Corp. is quietly pulling back support for Java in its new products, dealing a new blow to a rival technology that played a starring role in the software giant?s continuing antitrust battle with the government. More....

I wouldn't worry too much about that.

The power of java, IMO, is not in the application developement, but in server side solutions. Java as it is right now, just has too much overhead, for running application programs.

C++ does the trick for those programs right now.

The issue as I see it is with Applets embedded in webpages. This will effectively make applets an impractical solution for small web-served programs. Javascript is too hard to get to work across browsers (not that Java is great across platforms, but better than javascript), and server-side solutions don't allow for dynamic changes.

This was one of the main selling points of Java to newbies, and this is not a good development. Oh I wish Microsoft would put their energy towards improving technology rather than stamping out competition.

So sun comes up with a nice little script like that of marcomedia which prompts for the download. Would work out well.

Gotta say I'm not a big fan of Java on the client side.

I've seen some done well but it seems most aren't worth the overhead

I wonder if we'll be seeing more of C# from MS as a replacement to their implementation of java.

bitdamaged - Very true, client-side Java is not it's best use, nor particularly impressive. However, there isn't really a better alternative

A Microsoft product would probably work better and faster, but only on Windows, so it wouldn't hold the same promise as Java.

Actually I think Flash can be a lot more effective than Java on the client side and provide a lot of the same results

That being said what MS is doing is f#$ked up and lame all things considered.

Bah.

I've seen some great things done in both Java and Flash and some horrible things that I would like to forget about done in Java and Flash. The point is it really depends on the author. If they have talent and good taste it's going to look good. If they don't then it's going to look bad.
