InI, I would suggest you to install BSD-based OS if you plan to do serious network related stuff (BSD has the best implementation of TCP/IP stack). So either FreeBSD or if you really want Linux - go with Red Hat Linux...

Yeah my understanding (not personal experience) is that the FreeBSD builds are better for servers,. generally more secure out of the box and better networking.

Personal choice for a desktop linux is mandrake. But arguing mandrake and red hat is like arguing tangerines and oranges they're virtually identical.

oh oh oh KDE desktop though.

I would also hop on the FreeBSD bandwagon. I have been using it for a good amount of time as my primary desktop enviornment. I have had some issues. Such as needing to know that I must install a wrapper in order to run X-windows as a user. Once I figured that one out it was as easy as installing the piece of software via the ports and running with it.

Figuring out the different commands and setting up your bash enviornment is also another issue, and then stylization. Shit that making my look and feel just right took me a while, but hell I had some thousand odd choices that I could make, as opposed to just running windows.

As oposed the the above recomendation I would not go with a KDE build. It takes you too far away from the terminal, and is far to much overhead for a server. For a server you would not have to run or install an Xserver at all you can run it all from the command line. If you are going in for a windows system, I would recommend Fluxbox (fluxbox.sourceforge.net) as opposed to KDE, it is a very light weight enviornment.

For a linux build the I wouldn't go with RedHat, it is a good build but there is that whole overhead issue again with the graphical user interfaces. Slackware and debian offer much better choices, and debian has an almost equally easy install.

As for some advantages both ways. Linux has more software specifically designed for it. And redhats custom installer can be found for a lot of different software which make the install really easy. FreeBSD has linux compatability which lets you run all that software anyways. The package management system is amazing as well as the ports system.

By far the hardest part was figuring out what software to use. It took a little while on that end.

Some things not to miss would be:
xmms (MP3 playing system, that goes way beyond just MP3's)
gkreallm (a nice system monitoring tool)
Acroread5 (adobe acrobat reader)
xemacs (a really involved editing enviornment, another operating system in itself, ties in with JDE and such things really cool.)
eterm (an improvement over XTerm for accessing the command line)

There are thousands of different tools, but if you are going to be using it for research/development/server those are all great peices of software. Xemacs is prolly the most useful, you can run almost anything through it and it makes work really easy. It has a sharp learning curve though. Lots of keyboard shortcuts, almost one for every thing you do. ctrl-x ctrl-s ctrl-c ctrl-v ctrl-c is the most useful for me as it saves my current file and recompiles it.

I am getting long winded here. Most of the above stand if you install either Linux of BSD. Good luck, once your install it you won't go back, I know I won't. Things on windows seem so hard to do after using *nix.

*ahem* don't forget about the Quake Server!!

if you don't install one.. it'll never be a ~true~ Linux box...

...I could sworn I mentioned Slackware...
