For some time, I though I wouldn't last long enough to see the new asylum... But it is finally here

I like the new look, I like the reply box, in fact I like everything I've seen for now.

Something puzzles me though, how did you madscis converted all the old CGI asylum to a brand new PHP board, and kept at the same time all the database ? I don't know much about CGI, but well, it is kind of magic to me...

So as a conclusion... Thanks, and keep the good work !

You are right, that's not perfect yet. I'll look into it!

MS -
It took quite a number of tries until the importer TP wrote got everything right, but in the end it was easier than I would have thought - the old forum software stored everything in flat text files instead of a database, and getting it over to the Grail was essentially 'just' a matter of interpreting those thousands of files correctly and inserting all the information into the new database.

By darn hard work - all the information was there, but it took about 10 imports (each running at least 45 minuts -the earlier ones much longer (think 5 hours...)) till finally just about everything was imported correctly. (ok, this probably was elevated by the fact tha we changed major things around at times, like the ubb code that was completey rewritten a couple of months ago).
It wasn't 'difficult' - but it was much work. Fortunatly, I had a more or less dedicated machine that handled it, for I had to increase the virtual memory of the machine to two gigs (minus some ram) so that the php importer would actually run through without apache dying in the proccess - that much for php memory 'handling' (=leaking).

many changes, some great, some will take getting used to..

so the method for linking to a faq has changed to just [ faq# ] ? (without the spaces) no more listing the url?

as i spent no time testing out the beta, i have no complaints .. though i do miss the "next topic" and "previous topic" links... and being able to finish reading a thread while a clicked link loaded

love that the faq is alphabetized! LOL, finding some topics will still take some work

an impressive piece of work - thanks for all the effort!

[edit - why does my profile begin "Cell #1009, inhabitant calls himself "velvetrose" ? a bit sexist there, eh?

yes [ id ] now works from every where (even your user details in your cell (click your name, and then admin to change them).

Though some (and soon many, I guess) pages have gotten linkwords already. Like ->faq, or ->Tyberius Prime. Just prefix them with ->. There are also some other 'namespaces' - like php help php->unlink()
just prefix the -> with php. See ->aboutUBB for there details.

Most users, those having only letters and numbers and spaces in their names at least, have also been assigned linkwords. Like ->velvetrose , which now links to your cell.

Edit:
Well, would you prefer itself? Or maybe, themselves would fit many inmates ;-)

linkwords are not case sensitive ;-).

And the automatically handle spaces within them, always choosing the longest linkword possible.
(so, if there was as page assigned 'tyberius prime and his cats' and I type ->Tyberius Prime and his cats , all of it would become a linkword. But since there's only ->Tyberius Prime, that's all that's chosen.

I've been browsing some more through the FAQ, the archives etc, and the new asylum is actually much clearer and easier to use. The search tool is a wonder of efficiency, and more convenient to use.

I also read what were the new rankings, the system is clearly very funny ! However, I was surprised that the numbers were not 'Prime' numbers In fact, they were just multiplied each time by 7...

By the way, I was just testing the new linkword, when I found something with google->ozone asylum...

Another address of the Ozone Asylum is http://grail.coonabibba.de/ ... Funny.

TP - no offense intended. just a nitpick. in my time here in the asylum, i've never seen us called inhabitants - thought i might have missed the reference. i've seen the phrase "inmates" used on many occasions though. i've always thought of it as part of the ambience of the place.

a quick search of the faq and archives will bring up a plethora of examples.. everything from how do the inmates choose their names to how many inmates belong to deviant art.

I was hoping to get an opinion on to what exactly you'd change it so it sounds right even to someone for whom English isn't a foreign language

of those possibilities imho maintaining the asylumites as "inmates", in care of "Mad Scientists" and the doc, seems more appropriate as no one except the doc can/could(?) actually release an inmate by deleting their name from the rolls.

so: Cell ##, the home of inmate "insert name" - would be my preference.

There's a fancy sheme to decide when something is 'new' since your last visit... If i remember correctly, reloading the front page (or quickchanges) after 900 seconds counts as a new visit - clearing of course the old ones you've seen last time.

We'll adjust the cell title. German english teachers always claim the masculin pronoun includes the feminin - without adding that this only applies in general.

InI -

Well... why would someone want to delete his own post? Editing the content away in case of emergency is possible for all Mad Scis and seems good enough to me really.

At the moment the "20 liners" thread doesn't have a linkword assigned. Now I don't know if it had when you were testing this, but if not there's just no way for the ubb parser to recognize ->20 liners as a linkword as they are not assigned automatically (and should only be used for pages that get linked to a lot). You can assign linkwords on the "preserve" pages linked to from the footer of threads, FAQs etc.

When there's no linkword you can create links almost as easily by just saying [pageID], like 20 Liners.

Another possibily is that linkwords starting with numbers just aren't allowed... there might be some hint on that somewhere in the FAQ.

The caching of form contents is only a help for those who accidently click a link other than the submit button while composing their text, so they don't have to start all over again after going back to the page containing the form. Has saved me quite a number of times already....

hm... I'll look into the ->20liners buissness.
how about ->20l , or ->40liners ?

And indeed, linkwords may not start with a number, since that confuses the url parser. Hm, so why is the regexps evaluating that 20liners as a valid linkword? You should never have been able to set it.

Edit: Liner, liners, linees, whatlinesyourpath?

Edit: That was one very subitly broken regexps.

i considered this after my postings.. that perhaps an inhabitant was der rather than die.. in english, speaking of people in general, i was taught that the masculine pronoun was often used to mean both male and female (masculine and feminine), because people are of the family of man.. however, when speaking of specific persons, the gender of the prounoun matches the gender of the persons. therefore in our specific cells, since there is little way of knowing which some asylumites are, then a more neutral approach works best.

I assume you're talking about the faq pages.
See, about every page in the grail is addressed via a simple id, faqs, threads, forums, user cells.
When we were importing all the old information from the asylum and the faq, we had to start with the users, or we wouldn't have been able to make the correct links to user's cells. Therefore all faqs (which where the second thing we imported) got bumped by about 4500.

Please note that pretty much all the old urls are still working, and redirect to the new asylum page.
Example: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/1005 still points to the sandbox, and http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum1/HTML/009078.html still goes to myIE2.

I'll try - basically everyone has built their cell automatically into their profile, or perhaps rather their profile into their cell, so it's only the one page you get to by clicking your user name for both. Clicking the "Edit Cell" button there will reveal a so far empty field for "additional information" where you can move everything you previously had in your FAQ cell.

From there you could of course still link to subpages in the FAQ, and maybe it will also be possible to add pages to your cell directly without using the FAQ at all in the future... I don't think we have quite thought the whole cell idea to its end yet. As it is now, every inmate just has his/her profile/cell page available for anything he/she might want to show to the rest of us, however much that might be

1) Click my toolbar link to the asylum.
2) Click a couple of times to view the content of a new thread.
3) Scroll back to the top of the page and click "OZONE Asylum"
4) AHHHH!!! The pills have all gone yellow!

With the old Asylum I was able to click this link and I would return to the front page and it would not have modified those topics which had changed since my last visit.

I am browsing with Firebird on FreeBSD if that means anything.

Even after refreshing the page and hitting Strg+F5. Doing that in the old Asylum turned all dots yellow for me, but here it doesn't any more.

I'm using Firefox on Windows here... are you sure all cookies get accepted correcty? The ones called 'lastVisit' and 'thisVisit' control the pill colours.

Thanks for the explanation...

So let me spit it back to make sure I understand...
While a user can access both their original FAQ cell, and now their new profile, the new profile makes the old FAQ obsolete? So we can copy over the information from the old FAQ cell to the new profile, and then we don't need the old FAQ cell anymore... ok.

New question: is it preferrable, at this point, to migrate that information over to the new profile? I mean, ultimately, folks will go into the profiles by the linkword that is the user's name... so are you planning to completely phase out the FAQ cells eventually?

now, time to be pedantic.

the arrow image has a few stray pixels - has this been spotted by anyone else yet?

it's even easier to see if you view it on a white background - just click here to see it.

ha ha, the ranking system is pretty cool. Who thought of that ? great stuff. Ye just know some troll is gonna get " In Solitary Confinement " in 11 posts....

Am curious where those numbers came from, e.g Schizophrenic (1 in 5764801)

Is the post count completely lost ? Its a pity, for the last four years a computer has been keeping track of it, its a shame to throw it out imho.

Why not both ?

Just had a crap idea. Seeing as though there is a little more room on the left these days, why not have more "with"s i.e

when lets say your on Maniac, it randomly picks a with i.e:
Maniac with Narcolepsy
Maniac with Epilepsy
Maniac with Six Fingers
Maniac without a cause

? I dunno, is that crap like I'd suspect ? .. or if you could fill it in yourself.

Okay - didn't see this mentioned, but maybe I missed it.

If you post a reply to a message, and then go back and click the 'edit' button, it opens the previous message in the thread (the one above yours). Not yours.

I hope that makes sense

@Tiberius Prime: Oops ok. Im using Internet explorer 6.0.2800.1108 xpsp 2 where I'm getting the little yellow triangular warning symbol at the bottom left on the status bar saying Error on page (Insert slimies drop down menu link not working and Insert UBB Code dropdown link not working either.) In fact all options in the "Insert Text" area are disabled.

quote:

... but in Mozilla Firefox v 0.8, Mozilla Firebird v0.7 and AOL version 8 browser everything is working just fine..

Ahh.. I just noticed something else.. I put my original post in.. then I try to edit it as I spotted some spelling mistakes.. then when I try to edit it a second or third time my text in the text editable area returns to the first version I submitted with the first set of error.. even if I try to edit it within the allowed time frame (ie. withing 30 seconds even)

ozphactor: Anyhow I'm not complaining either, but it puzzled me when I noticed that little change. I wondered if I had some problems of cache. And, I found nothing about the new time setting in the FAQ though I remember having seen somewhere that it was GMT+2.

well, I'm on GMT + (1|2) (depending on time of year) - reason enough, no?

Indeed, with the Doc having moved to the West Coast, he might be prefering to see PST,
but if he doesn't speak up, it goes back to GMT + 2 - consider the current PST time a mishap - having developed on a server in germany, we kind of forgot about it.

Just to nitpick, it's currently PDT, not PST. Each occurs only half the year.

However, it's referred to as Pacific Time the whole year round.

It's one of my pet peeves to see someone's business hours listed always as "9-5 CST." I feel like I should shift the times an hour to figure out when they're open during the summer.

wouldn't it be PDST (Pacific Daylight Savings Time) - like CEST being Central European Summer Time and CET - Central European Time - in winter? Or does the West Coast really abreviate PDST to PDT? Pacific Daylight Time, what?

It's not just the West Coast. The standard abbreviations are ...

PST MST CST EST
PDT MDT CDT EDT

But you can typically just use PT, MT, CT or ET unless there's some reason you need to refer specifically to the current daylight-saving status.

Now if my Zone Alarm will just go away and stop asking over and over and over and overrrrrrrrrrrr if it's ok to send a clear text password to the zone. Maybe I better change my passwork to see if that helps.

if you delete your cookies, or uncheck 'remember me' and post - it should be deleted.

Maybe firefox has another 'remeber my form details' kind of feature that you accidentially enabled?

There is a todo on this to add a 'forget about me' button - but that's gonna be a couple of days at the very least, before it get's active.
