Topic: I wanna learn traditional animation & ANIME (Page 1 of 1)

HI guys, I really need some advice here. I wanna learn basic cartoon animation but I'm not sure how to like start? I've done real simple cartooning in flash but I guess I like wanna start doing soething a little more intense.I' dreally like to learn some traditional cartoon animation. I'd really like to learn drawing manga and anime. The thing is that for now I can't join any academy or institute and like I really want to learn how to do this. I'd like advice on:

-What to do?
-What software tools that can be used in cartoon animation?
-Any free resources or available books on animation for consulting?

I know this request sounds sorta far fetched but I really need someplace to start.

To do animation you need to have a pretty solid background in fine arts..you have to know how to draw human figure pretty good, if not I suggest take courses on that somewhere at workshop near you.
Draw draw draw...is all I can I say...you can buy tracing paper and try doing some of it traditional way...

or you can use flash(pretty damn good software for animation)...which I can see you already have...so spend some time reading manula and get to know how to use it.

Here is a good book to understand animation..its awesome, buy it.

there is no such a thing...drawing anime, drawing disney, drawing that or this...

just go, sing up in some workshop and learn drawing from life...figure, landscape, still life, etc.

you might as well try some painting...When you will be good enough at it, you will see that you can pretty much draw anything you want..

believe me, all pros are gonna say the same thing...there is no trick or secret...just spend a great deal amount of time drawing and well..it all depends on how much effort you are planing to put into it...

well, I will write down the things that you should do; first keep having all that passion for drawing and animating, then draw as much as you can outdoors, sketch everything and everywhere you see, get genaral ideas for perspective backgrounds and gestures of human or animals, once or twice take life drawing classes, go to the zoo, draw, draw and draw......then get some animating materias like a animation disc light table, got mine in cartooncolour.com, get paper too and the pencils, also get the pencil test from digicelinc.com and test your animated sequences on your pc, get the richard williams the animator's survival kit, it will give you all the information you need, there are some Miyasaky books of animation classes to learn anime animation for animals and people, you can find all these books at any borders, hope all this help you!

I'm no animator, but I'll second Ruski's advice. I study multimedia and I've worked with a fair few animators in my time there. The good ones, even when it comes to 3D animation, have a damn solid traditional drawing and animation background. I also have a friend who wants to be an animator but she never does anything constructive about it. She can draw anime fairly well, but that's about it. She refuses to enroll in any kind of art class unless it's "animation", but she doesn't have the grades to get into any of the animation courses over here. Suffice to say, she's 26, unemployed and has few skills, and that's not likely to change any time soon with her current attitude.

In terms of 2D animation software, there's also toon-boom-studio which a couple of people at my university have used for various projects, but it's definatly no substitute for solid traditional pencil and paper drawing & animation skills. Most of these kinds of programs are designed to make it easier to produce animation for the digital medium, but the key word there is "produce", not animate or draw. You still have to learn how to animate before you can use them well.

Mmmm... That book rocks. I just picked it up, and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

To echo the others... I have taken some 3d computer animation classes, and I have played with software, but I really dont have a good hand for drawing... and it really holds me up.

How To Draw Manga
Free tutorials, pretty basic but you can get some ideas. You can also uy some equipment from here.

I was going to recommend Julia Dillon's tutorials and I visited her site, seems they were moved over to How to Draw Manga (although I don't know why).. Go figure huh? In any case, Julia Dillon made some friggin' awsome tutorials a long time ago on drawing and I definately recommend you read them and study them... They taught me a hella lot.
