Sometimes when you move a layer with mask the layer moves with the mask. But sometimes when I move a layer the mask stays fixed and only the content is moved. This results in masking other areas. How can I control the mask attachment?

I'm tempted to say RTFM. But I'm in a good mood, so here's a screenshot showing 2 layers with a mask linked ( the layer A ), and one without ( the layer B ). Simply click at the position of the link and voilà.

And? Just because I don't want (desoite the fact that I don't know where to look for it) to read the fuc manual, I can't ask here or what.

Thanks for the answer anyway.

look buddy,
this place rarly does your homework for you and reading the manual most definatly belongs to 'doing your homework'.
Be glad you got an answer at all - and a rather polite and complete one at that.

Yep. Because if you took 10 seconds to go in Photoshop, type F1, click on Search, and enter "layer mask", you'd have found the answer at the 9th item in the result.

Note to self: I definitely have too much time.

Note to poi: a functional community relies on people like you who take the time to answer thoroughly and thoughtfully even though it's frustrating sometimes, I'll bet you there are readers who (although they didn't ask the question themselves) never even knew you could separate a mask from its layer and consequently learned something useful.

So poi and others like poi should continue to be the helpful people they are even (as if they could be anything else). It's what makes this place what it is. Even telling Arnitald where to LOOK for the help info will surely help someone else!

Well ok, I already forgot that I had a profile. I won't make a cell... nobody to talk to.

But this attaching appeared really random to me, for whatever reason so I posted it here. If you don't want to answer, then don't do it. I would certainly look for it then... but I haven't thought that way! So what? Now I know.

It just always releases this wave of: Oh you noob! feelings, just because it appears so obvious to you.

Anyway that doesn't matter.

By default, a layer or layer set is linked to its layer mask or vector mask, as indicated by the link icon between the thumbnails in the Layers palette. The layer and its mask move together in the image when you move either one with the move tool. Unlinking them lets you move them independently and shift the mask's boundaries separately from the layer.

Ok... and it was under unlinking layers and masks... Uh. Well I don't know if I would come across that if I had no idea how it is done... actually I could find it out by looking at the dumb layer pallette. Ok I am an idiot. Sorry for wasting your time. ( )

Ok one more question, this time about shapes:

How to make a whole into a circle using another circle shape? Or how to substract the hole-circle from the circle below it? I can't find a method after I drew the circle on another layer... (as a shape, I don't want to rasterize)

Hmm I think I know i.e is if I understood the question properly. You want a hole in a circle... well if you want to make it using the pathfinder, if you've used illustrator before you won't be new to this stuff.

Select the Circular Shape tool and select Paths from the options bar(3rd from left). Now make open the paths palette and make a new path layer. Make a circle and using the black arrow(path selection tool) select the circle. On the options bar you'll see these overlapping boxes. Make sure the first one is selected. Now make another circle inside the first one(on the same layer). Again using the arrow select the circle and this time select subtract from shape area (2nd box). Now drag select the circles and press the Combine button in the options bar. All you have to do now is save it as a shape (edit>define custom shape).

OR you could just use the preset shapes, theres one with a ring!!!!

And just for the record we're both Bipolar (III) Inmates so there's no comparison between any of us in other words no n00bs clear

Thanks! I am not doing it in Illustrator because only have the trial version and I would have to do some training with it. Thank you! Your help has been exactly what I needed.

I agree tottally . This is a comunity and I don't like to see to much RTFM comments . It is better show someone what to do and then kindly tell them how easily they could of found it for themselves when their brain was turned on . But lets face it this the asylumn everyone's brain here is a little rattled more often thatn not. This will build the community promoting more helpful members instead of members that will never bother to post a question again for fear of being accused of laziness
