So I'm licensing a couple of photos to a UK magazine and, of course, I'll need their money. They've asked for my bank account info so they can deposit funds, but I certainly don't want to give access to my account to just anyone. (They could take as well as give. Not to mention the insecurity of e-mailing such info.)

So, what are the alternatives? I, of course, want to receive my money in US dollars. I know I can have people pay via PayPal in the US by credit card, without their having to sign up for an account. I don't know if it would work from the UK to the US, however. I think I might want to avoid that whole fiasco, anyway.

Should I just ask for a cashier's check? They can just request one in the amount of payment in US dollars, right? I know there is an amount of stupidity inherent in my question, but I always assume there's some factor I don't know about behind anything I haven't done before.

Better ideas? Easier solutions?

yeah........i wouldn't give my account info to them. A cashier's check would work but so would PayPal. We get paypal from england as well as other countries all the time via paypal. An international money order would work as well.

I think the easiest solution might in fact be Paypal, though you should check how much they charge you for receiving payments made by credit cards as that could be a few percent. What I know is that sending $$ to the U.S. from Germany can be done very easily via Paypal, and since they are part of eBay it should work just as well from the UK.

I've paid internationally via PayPal which is nice cuz they don't charge to pay, but to receive Check the cut they'll take the add it to the total or give them the option of the cheque <-- Ingerlish for check

Get them to send it to 'Emps'... he'll take out a few quid for some room temp guiness and a new dress and send you what's left in a plain brown envelope.

If you can't trust Emps... who can you trust.

Is it differetn in America with bank details then?

In teh UK you only need to give your name, account number, sort code, and maybe expiry date, this information will only allow them to deposit number but not withdraw, for that they'll need your debit card number.

Yeah, I thought it was possible to give enough information to just get but not give. Well, whatever.

Yes in the US you give you bank account number and they can deposit money into your account, but can not withdraw. To withdraw they need the correct papers, being a valid ID.

Not according to the rep at my credit union. To access it, they need the routing number for the bank and the account number, at which point they can deposit or withdraw. That's what I gave PayPal, after all, and they can do both.

As for using PayPal, it looks like they'll charge 2.5% on currency conversions, as well as the usual 2.9% to receive money, which is 5.4% of my sale. Too much for me.

I guess I'll just ask them to mail a cashier's check.

But not to Emps.

You see now I was going to suggest this but I knew some sensible, level-headed inmate would think of it too
