Recently I've been getting artifacts like this on my screen: http://www.slimeland.com/misc/radeonartifacts.png

Does anyone know what might cause this? Overheating, perhaps? I have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro, and it most often happens when I'm running a game or one of my own OpenGL applications. It's been getting pretty bad recently and it's starting to make it difficult to use my computer.

Actually I think you'll find overheating is just the ticket. I was getting exactly this recently with my old videocard. Turns out the GPU fan had ziezed and my GPU was very quickly overheating. Windows demands alot from a GPU, moreso than just about anything else, so you probably won't see it until you get into Windows... I replaced my video card with an older GeForce 2 MX 400 *shudder* and things have run just fine since.

Blah. I like my video card, and it cost me a lot of money. Hoping there's no permanent damage, how could I prevent overheating? Is it as simple as buying a bigger fan and somehow sticking it onto the card? Heh =)

well, make sure the PCI slot next to your AGP one is clear, or get a powered fan array to go into that PCI slot... or yes, you can get bigger GPU Fan/heatsink combos, and I'm damn sure there's guides around on how to attach them properly

I have the same video card, ATI radeon 9800 pro, and I use VGA silencer rev.3 (from www.arctic-cooling.com) to keep it cool (without noise!). So far no problem at all (knock-knock-knock).

I just took a look at the site and it seems they have even better stuff now.

You may want to give it a try, since the price (newegg, zipzoomfly, excaliberpc) is very good, around 20 bucks.

It kinda looks like when the refresh hz are out of bounds of the monitors, have you tried playing with settings, vertical sync and all that.

Yup, the PCI slot next to the card is clear. But when I put my hand on the card it feels very hot, almost enough to burn. Viol, I took a look at that site, and I take it that the coolers go into the slot below the card, right? If so, will I need *another* clear slot below *that* to get enough airflow? Because I only have 4 slots and 3 are in use. Thanks for the link.

Hugh, I haven't messed with the vertical sync. I'll try that, but some of the problems I get are different - like polygon vertices popping into the center of the screen, so I dunno.

that a photo or a screenshot?

Either way, it looks like something I had years ago - a graphic card which's ram was unreliable - though heat was not a problem back in that day,
it very well could be your problem.
Does it get better if you leave the case open?

ATI's driver are also poor handlers of OpenGL based applications. You said you noticed it happend alot when you were using OpenGL programs, so maybe trying seeing if there's an alternative Direct3D setting.

I would suggest crackin the case open and cooling it with a fan just to see if that helps any.

<bad advice>
just put some ice cubes on the gfx card, that should cool it right down.
