have you googled it?

Its gonna take a number of techniques... I would suggest looking up Paths and the Pen tool, Lighting effects for bevels and embosses... actually it depends on the style you want.

So lets start there. You want a clip art guitar? an air guitar? a painted guitar? a guitar illustration? a inked guitar? a cartoon guitar? a 3d guitar?.....

um... so yeah.

What do you want?

I would like to create a custom guitar design... The kind of picture would be a realistic lookign thing just a normal picture. It does not have to be 3d but at least have the lighting effects on the body.

No I hav enot googled it.

Yeah, try actually doing something instead of just waiting for it to fall in your lap - which just isn't going to happen around these parts.

Relax, synax. He's new to the game, we all were once.

Trigger, I'd agreewith izzy's approach. Try googling some pictures of guitars just to get a basic idea of what you want it to look like. Then perhaps search for a basic tutorial on the pen tool. The FAQ has some notable resources like GN and Doc's tutorial page. They cover basic to advanced PS principles. Your best bet would be just to open PS and mess around with it. Show us what you come up with and we can help you better from there.

The same way you would make anything else.

Yes, that sounds obviousland unhelpful.

But....man, what a question.

It's the same as asking "how do I draw flowers?" Answer? The same way you draw anything esle.

Making a guitar in Photoshop has nothing to do with guitars. You need to be able to create custom shapes. There are a ton of ways to do so. You need to be able to apply shading and lighting to your objects. Again, there are tons of ways to go about this. You need to be able to create and apply textures. Yep, you guessed it....tons of ways.

There are two important buttons at the bottom of every page here: handson, and the gurusnetwork. Both have great photoshop tutorials to get you started.

More importantly, you need to understand the basic concepts involved with any visual art. You need to understand how make the forms that work. You need to understand lighting, and how it affects objects. You need to understand what kind of textures different materials will have, and how this will affect the lighting and the interaction with the environment.
IMO, the best way to start is by drawing it on paper. If you can't get something halfway decent on paper, chances are you won't have much luck in PS either.

Ah such modesty - the two best tutorials you'll need are DL's set:

http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorial/creating_shapes/

http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorial/adding_depth/

They won't tell you how to make a guitar graphic - its better than that!!! They'll teach you how to make shapes and add depth so you can create a whole range of other things. Its the gift that just keeps on giving!!!
