I have noticed that when I mouse over links to some sites using Firefox, a small preview window pops up showing that site. On links to other sites I just get a picture coming soon graphic by alexa.com. I assume that this is something similar to the favicon, however I have been unable to find any information on how make this feature work on my site. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be appreciate the help. Please refer to samples below:

Have you installed Alexa's toolbard or registered to some kind of service ?

I would have to assume this is, as poi said, an extension you've installed in your borwser, and not something on the page itself.

I do recall installing some plugins for Firefox such as the color sample tool, I may very well have installed the preview plugin. I still wonder why some sites display a preview and some don't. I also noticed the sometimes the preview window shows a different version of the site it links to. It will be the same company, but not the main index page.

Yup, that's it. I did install link preview, but why does it work on some sites, but not on others?

From the link that poi provided, I was able to learn this:

It is a nice program. Doesn't cover all websites, though that isn't the programmers fault. The thumbnail archives being used don't have everything, and with all the websites out there it is impossible to create thumbnails for them. I was a tad bit disappointed that some larger sites were not included in these data bases, but there were some obscure website included so I guess it evens out. I installed this after I installed 1.0.3 so it should work for everyone. Doesn't work for sites like google because of the way google and other search sites have their links. Would be a nice addition to make it work for google. A cool extension to play with when pictures are available.

I've got an extension called BetterSearch, this extension for Firefox enhances Google, A9, MSN, Yahoo, ALLTheWeb and some others by adding those preview thumbnails, and from what i understand they're taken from The Web Archive and the Way Back Machine, what extensions do you have installed Wavmixer?

Cheers,

Yeah I noticed, I was just pointing out that there's another extension that does the same thing and better, also that it gets everything from the internet archive.

No biggy

Yup, Link Preview was the plugin on I added to firefox. Still don't know what I can do to ensure that it works on my client sites though. Colorzilla is another great plugin for sampling colorcodes.

Nothing! both extensions read from databases, when it's not in the database there will be no preview, when the info in the database is old the preview will look diiferent from the current site.

You can't put the whole F* in one database.

Besides those plugins are meant for the end user who is browsing the web not for the developer who wants to incorporate it in his site.

I he wants to put his site in the db the site should be old enough and important enough. if so on a good day it might apear in the waybackmachine or something simular. Or maybe not...
