Gloom is a mod for Q2. It's aliens vs. humans and the basic idea is to wipe the other side out. Not just kill the other team, but destroy spawns. Humans destroy alien eggs and aliens destroy human teleporters.

Past few months I've been having a blast getting back into Gloom. Nothing like running into a dark room only to have a hatchling rip your face off before you can squeeze out a shot. Yeah, I've jumped out of my seat plenty of times.

Because of the nuances and scope of gameplay, it is multi-player only. For me, this adds to the intensity of the game. The human player factor is a great thing to have in a game.

Now, Gloom isn't your average run-n-gun FPS game. Aliens are limited in ranged weapons and have to get up close and personal for the most part (like a hatchling ripping your face off).

There is a great deal in Gloom, and I'm lovin' it.

I've heard of Natural Selection, but never really looked into it. If I see a cheap copy of HL, I'll check it out.

Yes, people still play around with Q2. Maybe not the Q2 engine in particular as there are other clients available. Even though the graphics and what-not may not be up to par with newer engines, game play is a big factor in why Gloom et al have survived for so long.

Never played Counter-Strike and I don't think I ever will. After so many years of playing Unreal Tournament, I've largely lost my taste for pure human FPS games. At least, I think CS is a pure human game.

Buti thought you said that Gloom is a human only game?

Or do you meant that the characters you play in the game are human, in which case yes. However if you mean multiplayer only then that's not strictly true as you can have bots that are quite effective opposition and allies.

In Gloom, you can play a human or an alien.
Looks to be the same human vs. alien in Natural Selection.

Then again, Gloom is multi-player only in that there are no bots.
In that respect, human only.

The reason i say this is for a number of reasons:

1) fast Paced!!
2) Lots of Strats involved!!
3) It has been on since 98 and is still very much alive

So pretty much any game that is fast paced and requires strategy is a ripoff of Gloom? Right...
