Pretty nice Wes! But hey... don't wait till you have the $$ for another one to run dual monitors.

Hook up the old one in the meantime. I'm using an old and pretty tired 15" as a 2nd monitor and it works just fine for all sorts of things.

If you've got some desktop folders you access regularly...drag them over to the 2nd monitor. I use notepad quite a bit...have it in the quick start bar 'click' and it opens in the 2nd monitor. Copy from the main... paste to the 2nd.

Super handy for things like PS or pretty much anything with floating toolbars. Full screen image on your Primary... toolbars on the 2nd'ary... or a tutorial on the 2nd while you work in the primary.

Hook up that ol' baby... you won't regret it. And you might want to take a look at this which can be pretty useful.

I half envy you... I'm spoiled at my new job, I have three of those (and the laptop makes a 4th screen) But at home I don't even have ONE monitor right now (or a mouse or keyboard or anything really... just the tower, which is really the important part, right?).

I thought about hooking up the old one, but the biggest reason I bought the new monitor is because the old one is dying. It does the flicker of death at least a couple times a day and probably doesn't have much life left. I'm sure as soon as I get used to having two monitors, it'll give up the ghost permanently.

Besides, the thing is such a monster, I really don't have any room left on my desk for it. I'm already having to store my scanner away, pulling it out and hooking it up only when I need to use it.

Of course, the moment I can afford 3 of these babies, everything else goes on the floor, anyway.

My LCD monitor also does this, but I've found it pretty much useless in most situations. Especially once you discover subpixel text anti-aliasing (if you have XP I can tell you how to turn this on), it doesn't work right with a rotated display (unless the OS is smart about it).

It smooths fonts in all sorts of glorious ways, better than grayscale antialiasing, since it effectively triples the amount of pixels used to render a font.

It was invented by Apple hackers on the Apple ][, of late Microsoft has used it in Windows XP and Apple has placed it in OSX as well.

I worked for a company in the mid '70s that had an HP monitor that would subpixel anti-alias on all the graphics on the screen (not just the text). The monitor (we called them graphics displaysat that time) cost $10,000.00 and was as big as a pdp-11.

I suspect the Apple hackers who "invented" the technique borrowed it from HP or someone else.

subpixel anti-aliasing means that rather than having the pixels assigned to a rigidly fixed grid of location, each pixel can be wiggled a little bit.

I assume you are familiar with how lines will "alias" on the computer screen when you try to draw a line not on one of the ordinal angles (0, 45, 90, ...). When you want to draw a non-ordinal line and have subpixel anti-aliasing available, you can anti-alias the line by moving some of the pixels off the grid a little bit and it makes the line smoother.

Hmm, that's not what I was referring to. What I was talking about is a technique that only works on LCD screens, making use of the fact that each pixel contains a red, green, and blue dot, in that order, from left to right. This allows us to (sort of) triple the horizontal resolution of the screen.

If you have Windows XP and an LCD monitor, then turn it on and watch how smooth your text gets:

right click desktop -> properties -> appearance -> effects -> check "use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts," select ClearType

Note that this only works right if you're running at your LCD monitor's native resolution (which you had darn well better be).

Basically it takes a pixel and splits it into thirds (the RGB values as Slime mentioned already) for a nice and crispy textual experience.

I've done that with my normal monitor and it smooths text beautifully.

Things look kinda boldish(sp?) and smooth.
