With all the recent talk of Ep. III I was wondering if I'm the only one who gets real into the Expanded Universe. Does anyone else read all the novels, comics, graphic novels, etc.?

I used to, but lost interest. While there is a lot of interest in the Star Wars universe, I found that it's more interesting for me, personally, to hop in and out of new universes at will. I guess it's a side-effect of my ridiculously short attention span.
I'm currently reading "The Maze Game" which has a very unique and interesting universe; previously read Ender's Game, and want to read the rest of that series too.

Ender's Game is excellent. The rest of the series is good as well.

I'm the same as Wallaby, short attention span. I read a lot of the Star Wars novels a few years back.
Ender's game is great, I just read that actually. Currently I am re-reading the Wheel of Time series, my all time favorite.

I do believe the Ender series is by ORSON Scott Card, not Jason.
And the last several, including Shadow of the Hegemon, were complete garbage. This is important.

Jestah: In ther other Star Wars thread you mentioned:
quote: For those of you that haven't read many/any of the novels I'd highly recomend checking out Yoda: Dark Rendezvous & Labyrinth of Evil before you see ROTS. Those are the two novels that precede ROTS and are just great novels in general.
Which are:

Do you have any other recommendations?
Also it might sound like an odd question but my friend's son is obsessed with Star Wars (he was the littlest Darth Vader when we went to see it on Thursday - although I got to look after the cool helmet and light sabre during the film) but he is only 6 or 7 so I was wondering what age range the books are pitched at and if there is anything that would that'd stop a yungster (not "youngling" please!!!) from getting into them.

I've read all the books up to Vector Prime. I read Vector Prime but that is where it ended. I don't think R.A. Salvatore write for Star Wars very well. Not like he does for the Forgotten Realms stuff anyway.
I loved the heir to the empire series. those were really good. I might check out the 2 that you mentioned though. I have just a couple more of the Dark Elf books to read and then I'll have to find something else to read.
As for the graphic novels and comics. I used to read a lot of the comics, but that kind of went to the wayside. I do still pick up the graphic novels when it's based on a character I dig, like Boba Fett or Jango.....those are a must
But yeah.....I've read every book up through and including Vector Prime. Loved them. I highly highly recomend reading Shadows of the Empire if nothing else.
I also have collected over the many years many many many SW toys......some of which I am getting ready to go through and get rid of.
and......getting ready to go see Ep.III tonight......woohoo!!!

There are a lot of great books in the Star Wars EU Emps. If you're interested in post-ROTJ I'd suggest picking up the Thrawn Trilogy. Those are fantastic novels.

I read all of the post ANH EU novels. I haven't read any of the pre-ANH ones yet, but I plan on reading the two mentioned above.
The New Jedi Order series got better at the very end. Until then, I was reading it out of an internal conflict of obligation to the EU.
I felt that the NJO was basically an attempt to revive a universe by making what it is founded upon (the Galactic Civil War) completely irrelevent and unimportant. What is an Emperor compared to a whole species from another galaxy? I recall a part of the series where someone says something to the meaning of: "Had the Empire been still in existence, this threat would have wiped out the galaxy."
Sort of descrates the whole meaning of Star Wars.

I think it was just time to move on to something different I guess. Not really sure. I didn't like Vector Prime at all. I might pick them up again but I just didn't like where it was going I think.

Cool - the reviews say its the best of them bunch.
And the Hand of Thrawn trilogy after that?
And reading age? I was just tidying up and found my copy of Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker book from 1977 ("with 16 pages of fabulous colour") so such things probably aren't beyond a 6 year old

Emps,
There isn't anything in the novels that would be inappropriate for a child around 6 or 7, but they might be too difficult of a read for someone that age - I guess it depends on his reading ability. They have graphic novels aimed at younger children that might be of interest to him. Also, if you check out the Star Wars shop there are quite a few DVDs aimed at children that age.
The Hand of Thrawn duology isn't as good as the Thrawn trilogy, but its still an excellent read.

Good call on the graphic novels - I've now looked into it and made extensive notes now my main problem would be trying to get a read of any presents they get.
I was also wondering if there was anything that could be used as a jumping off point to examining some of the mythological sources that Lucas used and while a lot of them are distinctly academic I found a couple that seemed a simple start (esp. the first one):
Star Wars - The Power of Myth:

Anyone got either/both?

There are also a good amount of star wars books specifically for children (various age ranges).
I don't have any specific suggesions, but shouldn't be hard to find plenty of them geared towards his age range.

Ah but this spoils one of the main pluses of present buyin surely? The fact that you get to read/play with stuff afterwards!!

Aye, the Thrawn Trilogy was solid.
Unlike some of you, I enjoyed good amount of the New Jedi Order series... I think I've read all but mebbe 2 of them. There were some shotty chunks scattered throughout it, but on the whole I found it interesting.
Had I read the series from the beginning, I don't think I would have been as compelled to read them. Originally I picked up one of the books that was more than half way through the series while I was at an extended layover in an airport. I read along a little ways and ended up being intrigued that certain major characters were dead and it was apparent that their fates were within the series. So after picking up and reading one or two others in sequence, I decided to start from the beginning. I think I was more driven to read because I knew where the story was sort of going... so I just looked beyond some of the crap.
I'd go back and re-read some of the earlier ones to get a new feel for them, but I've got some warcraft to play... and if my "vision" is skewed as to how the story happened because my memory is trash -- I'm happily ignorant.

Seems that rather than do the sequels (which I think would be covered by the Thrawn books?) he is going backwards again to look at Yoda 100 years before the current 6 films which seems like a reaonsable idea:

I'd personally prefer an Interstellar War era move to post-Rebellion era but I think both is unlikely. George Lucas has been stating for years he has no interest in spending the remaining of his days working on yet another trilogy. I believe they were looking to begin a new series of pre-TPM novels next year. I don't know if that's still in the works though.
