I just heard that James Doohan, aka Scotty from the original Star Trek, has passed away.

No links or real information yet.

I didn't know he was a linguist.
Or that he had Alzheimer's.

That's so weird, I was just watching Star Trek IV yesterday. RIP.

yeah......real bummer. I didn't know he was a linguist either. NPR had a little blurb today and was talking about how many accents he tried while working on the character Scotty.

I happened to hear about this last night. A real loss. I'm glad I got the opportunity to meet him back in 2000. Super nice guy.

Incidentally, he was 80 at the time and had just fathered another child!

wes: I visited the big waste to read that article when I heard about this. Complete shatner.

Surely 'Scotty' was everyone's favorite

I contemplated returning the book, but thinking twice, I decided I should hang on to it. It might be worth something when he's dead.

That has got to be one of the best jabs ever. I've heard quite a few anecdotes along the same lines concerning Shatner.

I think my favorite Scotty moment was when he smacked his head. He's talking about how he knows the ship like the back of his hand, then whacks his head on a pipe. Seriously caught me off guard because the Star Trek crew isn't exactly known for slap-stick.

Farewell Scottie
Great pic and story in the big waste Wes

This poem came to mind when I read that.

Let Me Die a Youngman's Death

Let me die a youngman's death
not a clean and inbetween
the sheets holywater death
not a famous-last-words
peaceful out of breath death

When I'm 73
and in constant good humour
may I be mown down at dawn
by a bright red sports car
on my way home
from an allnight party

Or when I'm 91
with silver hair
and sitting in a barber's chair
may rival gangsters
with hamfisted tommyguns burst in
and give me a short back and insides

Or when I'm 104
and banned from the Cavern
may my mistress
catching me in bed with her daughter
and fearing for her son
cut me up into little pieces
and throw away every piece but one

Let me die a youngman's death
not a free from sin tiptoe in
candle wax and waning death
not a curtains drawn by angels borne
'what a nice way to go' death

It's a shame indeed.

It's funny you should mention that poem Tao, I was introduced to it only recently, and I can't remember where from, it's a great poem isn't it.

I met him once at a convention and he was an extremely nice guy. I was sad to learn of his death.

Seems they are blasting his remains into orbit.
