HI there, I have just had a though about about which I would like to hear your views.

Here we go then: do y'all think we are gifted with a potential of luck at birth, or is it something we can manage or create or push or whatever? Is there a mathematic way of "measuring" your luck? Do you think it varies at different ages or stages of our life?

I would like to know anything you've got to say about this, thoughts and opinions as well as "serious" sources...

I thought of posting this new thread because I am having quite unlucky times at the moment...
But it hasn't always been the case: although I had to spend quite a lot of time in hospital when I was younger for some not very serious reason (but still a bit of a hassle), I felt myself very lucky in many occasions in my life so far. But since last year it looks like I cannot get what I want nor need, i.e a flat at the moment, which is rather unfortunate... It is probably because I moved in another country, and I am probably having as much bad time as anybody else, but when you have to try more than three times to get something (bank account, your wages, a flat), you start getting the feeling that you should try something or somewhere else...

Also, I dreamt of thousand of ladybirds last night. I had never dreamt about ladybirds before, as far as I remember, and hadn't seen one since last week. Today I went out for a cigarette at lunchtime and I saw one. So I played the lottery for the first time of my life.

I think we do have genetic (or whatever) predispositions from birth, but most of it (the important parts, anyways) is determined by how we are raised.

Do you really believe in luck? Surely luck is just something we use to explain the unlikely or more importantly somethng we put responsibility or blame upon when things don't go our way, a stress reliever you might say, but something that we feel rather sorry for ourselves about when things don't go our way.

But seriously Luck is actually just a virus like the flu, there are two strains good luck and bad luck, I know this because in an episode of Red Dwarf they managed to isolate good luck and they used it to get themselves out of some rather sticky situations!

The concept of luck is just another way for us egocentric humans to center the random motions of the universe around ourselves.

I have noticed that some people get more bad luck than others though, that's about all I was talking about.
Some people are always in the wrong place at the wrong time, break an arm or a leg everytime they go on holiday, get robbed, or worse. So you all think it's a matter of taking care of yourself and making sure you watch where you put your feet?
I also have the feeling it has something to do with your attitude towards life. If you think you're a loser, a loser you'll be.

Good luck is being prepared when the right opportunity comes along.

Breaking bones every time you go on vacation is a sign you have osteoporosis.

I believe environment is the largest determining factor, followed by preparation, with genetics coming in a distant third.

If you are raised with a silver spoon in your mouth you may "feel" you have good luck, but it is environment. You might get lots of nice things, paying for a car or college is not really an issue, and life seems to be working out great. On the other hand, if you are born into a poor family and hard times, you may feel that you have bad luck. You may have to struggle through school working two jobs, deal with certain elements of your environment which are often absent from that of the wealthy. This is not to say success is impossible, but it is all around harder to succeed, a struggle, coming from a lower rung.

For instance, think of the many rich people, politicians for instance, in this world who would be shoveling shit if not for their silver sppon upbringings. Let us not even discuss their loose ethics, shallow nature, or any of those other bad traits which are often present.

Then again, money is not the only thing we relate to luck, but in today's materialist world it plays a big part.

I say who needs it? I think bad luck, or things of a negative nature happening in our lives not only makes us who we are, but makes us stronger and more appreciative of the simple things in life. Struggle teaches us not only about ourselves, but about humanity in geneal. It brings us closer in touch with the truly important things in life. I would rather have that than any amount of money or "good luck". Just try and be appreciative of what you do have. Want to feel better about it? Try putting yourself into someone elses shoes for a while. Think aout liing in Niger or Sudan, and then take a second look at your perception of an "unlucky" life.

In my expeience, and I can say that the past few years of my life seem very unluky, bad luck oftentimes changes over time into good results. One negative event can turn around a year later into very beneficial results, whether it is through the aquisition of experience or wisdom, being able to relate to and help another in a similar situation, or even gain of another sort.

Granted it doesn't happen that way for everyone, but I believe everyone recieves their opportunities at one point or another. The trick is grasping those opportunities, large or small, whenever you can.
