Looks like google is starting a jabber server, and not only that, it supports VoIP as well!!! Cool stuff, but you need a gmail account to use it.

It uses your same GMail address book, which is cool.

I still have a pile of GMail invites if anyone needs one. All I need is your current email address.

Can you use any e-mail client with GMail, or is it pure web/browser?

gmail provides pop3 access

and it works fine with IE or FF

Well, I'm giving Google Talk a try! And the POP stuff is just icing on the cake!

And even if they did, Jabber is very easily encrypted. Virtually all Jabber clients support it, anyway.

heard this on NPR on the way back from work. Gonna give that a try. I just have those friends that use so many different IM's. Have to use Trillian most of the time.

I also have a poo-poo load of gmail accounts to give away. I don't think I've used any of them

I have 50 or so.. I get the invites faster than I can give them away. I think that google talk will be bad ass once that they get all of the encryption stuff up and running. Im looking forward to the switch. It also said something in the newspaper about how aol is considering the switch to jabber. Hopefully then I will be able to use just google talk and not have to have trillian open =)

well i have to say, I love the interface. very small and unobtrusive.

It was kind of different in the way that if i typed something, and the other person didn't respond, I typed something else, it didn't add my log in name again, just added to the last one. Make sense?

I dig it though. I need to get a headset so I can try the "Call" feature
