You have to *stand up* for this.

While standing on your right leg move your left leg in a 'clockwise' motion. (your left leg should be out in front of you just a bit) Now with the left leg moving in the 'clockwise' motion hold out your left arm and make the figure 6 . Right leg right arm... same thing. Can't be done.

But the 'why' is rather interesting. Let me know when you want the answer. =)

My guess would be that it has something to do with the left-brain/right-brain motor fuction centres. It can't handle a request from two things on the same side of the body trying to go opposite directions, so one of them changes so they're both going the same way.

I would guess it is that the circle is an artistic thing, and the 6 is a mathematical thing. This causes a conflict in processing.

I'm not falling for your nefarious schemes.

Didn't seem like a problem for me, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Could you be more explicit, NoJive?

Nefarious: Infamous by way of being extremely wicked.

Kudos.

I would try the exercise, but I'm having a comprehension by reading conflict.

lol @bit. =)

Skaarjj is on the right track.. it 'begins' in your head with signals to specific nerves... but that's not the end of it. =)

reisio, if it's not a problem for you.... you are not from here. =) You have to stand up.. can't do this sitting down.

Stand on one leg (right)
Make a 'clockwise' motion with the left leg.
While left leg is in motion left arm (forefinger held pencil like) makes the figure 6.

Clearer?

o_O Ook.
I can do it for a few seconds but no longer. I think it's because that's the length of time it takes for me to realise that I look like an idiot and stop.

but then i have been told i'm not quite human.

For a split second I can do it but then my leg starts going haywire.

edit: just thinking of these types of things... I've never in my life heard anybody be able to say "Toy Boat" as fast as they can more than a few times.

LaSun: Unless you've 'evolved' a bit more than the rest of us you're probably not doing it correctly. =)

For rest of us it things go haywire when you start to make the comeback loop of the 6. Try it again and pay attention to the 6.

For those of you who feel that you have done this no problem, just one word of advice - check the direction that your leg is rotating *after* you start making the number 6.

For contrast, make a 9 instead. Works much better

Interesting study in how our brain works without our permission, No Jive

(for the record, I thought at first that I was doing this without a hitch....wondering what the big deal was. then I noticed that although I felt and noticed no difference, my leg was actually rotating *counter* clockwise even though I most certainly began rotating it clockwise...)

okay trying it again to satisfy the scientific community.

left leg going clockwise (checked my clock to make sure)... here comes the '6' with the left arm. left leg is now wanting to do a straight swing from left to right instead of round in a circle shape, but some concentration gets it back to clockwise circle. hang on, is it meant to be a continuous looped '6'? well, actually the looped '6' motion is easier to maintain than '6 - pause - 6 - pause' .... if all this is correct, then i'm doing it, i swear.

could it be a gender thing - the whole multi-tasking female scenario? i have had some dance training...? oh gosh am i a freak?

***Answer***

The reason you cannot do this is because .... it is the *same nerve.* the nerve telling your left arm what to do... the nerve telling your left leg what to do... same.

So your first set of instructions are circle the leg clockwise.... all well and good but then your next set of instructions along that same nerve conflict.

One nerve, two extremities. Kinda like... 'We're sorry, all circuits are busy.'

I'm so sure I must not be human - no problems either side at all, checking direction and everything. I'm half suspecting I'm misunderstanding the idea of "making a 6"....or maybe it is a nefarious scheme ;p

Just because most people can't do it doesn't mean all people can't do it.

My brother-in-law is able to do crazy shit like this without problem.

Another test to do is to hold both your hands in front of you with your index fingers pointing towards each other. Now move one hand in a circular motion away from you and the other hand in a circular motion in the opposite direction. See how long you can do that for before both your hands are moving in the same direction.
