Remember the startup screen for Photoshop 6? I've seen that style of art since I got Photoshop several years ago, but I've never spent the time to learn how to do it. It seems pretty straightforward, but every time I attempt it, it just comes out a mess of diorganization. Are there any tutorials out there to teach me how to make this style?

By the way, I'm supposed to turn in a poster on Thursday and I'd like use use this style. I have a bunch of pictures that I'd like to combine to a make a large photomanipulated montage of sorts. Thanks in advance.

I tend to find it a little hard to create stuffes like that that look... good.

Anywhoo... the meat of it is Layers Masks and Blend Modes. Oh, and a two proverbial buttloads of textured layers.

There is nothing all that hard to it... just... play. And find some intricately textured backgrounds, photos, what ever.

That's pretty basic Photoshopping - just layer crap on until it looks busy enough.

Thanks for the tips. The project got delayed a little due to an addition to my family: my first child was born on Monday

Here's what I have for the poster...probably will have to stay this way due to lack of time and other work to do. All I really did was blend the pictures together. I would have liked to do more with it, but I think it's good enough to get a decent grade. If you have any quick suggestions, I might be able to get them in before I print it around 10 am.

I'm probably more than a tad too late for you now BroChris (I'm such a slow tad) , sorry. Have you had a look on the Computer Arts website? I'm sure there was an artical and a tutorial on just such a style, about a year ago. I've just been to the site to check but I don't have much time at present and I can't find a searchbox there to do the "legwork" for me.
As others have said though it is basically layers, blending modes, masks and good source images. I tried to look at what you have done so far but I just get a 404 on both.
Congrat's on the new addition to your family.

Thanks, JKMabry.

Sorry, those links are bad. Note to self: always check links after posting!

I did check Computer Arts...went through all of their tutorials, but it looks like anything related to the style that I'm looking for is available only to premium members.

I've got about an hour till I have to print

Not much time to help then... I like what you have done so far. That white patch under the text and book is a bit distracting though, I realise that you may have it there in order to better see the text, but in my opinion 'tis a little bland.
Still I think it is a good start in this type of effect. I'm guessing that the words used need to be seen and understood, so you will not want to blend that part of the poster too much. In which case the text needs to be on a good background (not distracting) and a colour that makes it easier to read.
I know it's not much use to you now BroChris, but if there is a next time, collect to-gether the source images and text that you want to use and we could try to work something up together, with perhaps other people joining in and having a go.
Good luck with the exam.

[ed] Yes, I went through about half of CA's tuts and most of them are like that. Still I did see a link there to buy tutorials for as little as £0.99p. If I saw a tutorial that fitted exactly what I wanted I think I would buy it [/ed]

Thanks for the input. Yeah, if I gotten a better start on the project, I may have had more time for revisions. But alas, I'm sending it to be printed as I type. I may actually revise it some more just for fun, though. It won't count for my grade at all, but I like messing around
