You know, the "pre-mobile phone" devices... What do you know about them? Do you know if they can still be used and how? Any information would be very welcome, as I haven't found anything interesting so far...
Thanks!

Sure, people use them all the time still. They work the same way they always have as far as I know (like a cell phone you need a service provider).

But can you send a message to a mobile phone with a pager?

No, not unless it's a two way pager, most pagers are just for receiving messages, they have very little functionality

I see...
The fact is I got a text from some number I don't recognise, so I wanted to ask who it was by texting back, but before sending the text, it read "format: pager" on my hone...
So I just gave up, but I don't really like that kind of jokes, and I think this "person" has phoned me twice this week but cut the conversation just after I answered. I've had at least three "funny" new numbers this week, so I'm getting slightly pissed off. I don't like phoning back as I am always being very suspicious about that kind of things and heard about terrrible stories of phone calls to bastard servers...

Am I being stupid or paranoid?

you're being paranoid - but that doesn't mean you're not right.

so... the person is simply being impolite by sending a text message without his name (which of course would be ok if you can reasonably expect the other party to know your number - but somehow I don't think that's the case).
That alone would be reason enough for me not to reply (except of course if the text message was terribly exciting ;-) )

so long,
