It's about time to do this I'm guessing...

Please show your desktops in thumbnails so dial-up users dont have to wait.
If you have no place to host your desktop screenshot, I suggest you use ImageShack.

I'm not going to show mine because it's neutral grey. I hardly ever see my desktop so I didn't bother making it aesthetically pleasing.

For the longest time I used that photograph of someone's sister swinging on a line. I think it was Izzay's sister, but can't remember for sure. Awesome photograph and made a damn find wallpaper.

While my real-world desktop suffers from chronic entropy, I like my PC desktops clean. As a rule I keep no launchers on them and files and folders live there only temporarily while I work on them. I also lean towards wallpapers that don't overpower application windows. Under XP, I ?Pin to Start Menu? 24 of my most frequently used apps.

My primary workstation is a dual-monitor rig, which presents special problems for wallpaper. To my mind, the two halves should look good both on their own and together. The awkwardness of two inches of plastic and air down the middle should be minimal.

Three years ago I hit on this image from NASA which I use as wallpaper when I boot under XP. It had to be adjusted a bit so that most landmasses aren't split.

I use a similar one when I boot under Fedora Core 3 and a larger, 2560x1024 version on the PC I use at a client's office:

The primary workstation uses the digital imput of the left montitor. Attached to its analog input is a KVM switch connecting my Linux boxes.

My Fedora Core 2 box used mostly as a test server where I can test, crash and burn stuff before updating the production web server. Also used for my backup repository and it has the basic desktop apps installed in case my main PC blows up or something. This photo is from a friend's reef tank:

My Ubuntu 5.10 box, used mostly to mess around and occasionally to support clients' Unbuntu users. It's hard finding something to go with Ubuntu brown. I kinda like this artist's kinda manga style, and it's brown.

And finally, my NT4 box, rarely used now, where I test sites under 4.x browsers and applications pokey old hardware. When I had the time and equipment for photography, I shot rolls and rolls of sunsets. This one is of the North Coast of America. To cut down on clutter, I use TightVNC to access this box, hence the XP frame around it.

Well, I think I did the code for that right. It's a (slightly blurry) pic of my first baby, Orion, who we had to have put to sleep in June after he suddenly got sick and it turned out he had end-stage liver cancer that had gotten to his lungs. Would have been 10 years old in October. Not sure when I'm going to change it, but right now I have the new baby, Cayman, on the work laptop, but it's an older pic of him. He's 5 months old today and is probably over 60 lbs by now, the little cow of a Golden.

EDIT - Tao, where did you get the WoW skin at? That's pretty cool looking.

When we had a thread like this about a year or so ago Share Your Desktop! It sparked my interest. So I got myself a free copy of WindowBlinds I'm thinking of having a go at skinning myself
Also I might like to try an active desktop as a homepage too, see what that's like.
Ah so much fun to have...

I was thinking of getting the WoW game, it sounds great, but at this time that is not to be. So yo console myself I wrapped myself in the skin

[doh]New year, two edits already.
The first time I remember seeing windows skinned was when I first started to work my way through the Doc's "Hands On" tutorials. This was still before I was an inmate here and I noticed the look of Doc's PhotoShop MMmm photoshop in the screencaps. Old wood and leather style i think it was. This was I thought, totally befitting of a Master Guru and thought he must have made it himself.
It was only when I was an inmate here asking questions about the Docs tutorials that someone told me that it must have been skinned. [/doh]

(@lan, create a folder called "mess" or "desktopper" or whatever. It will become the messy spot of your comp, which helps organize the rest)
(@people who look for a way to efficiently organize theyre comps, my way is: one programs partition, ~20GB, one data partition, for the rest, one swap partition, for the speed, and on the data partition,
data is organised by media types: images, demos, videos, music, games, etc. which is exactly the same as the beyondwonderland structure. One "junk" folder on the desktop, and every once in a while,
I grab all files in the junk folder by media type, and move them to the relevant data folder)

Yeah seriously, people should stop using their Desktops as storage, it's so inneficient, I don't even think it's a good idea to use for commonly used applications, that's what the XP start menu is for and hell, even the Quick Launch.

Current at work is just the default winxp wallpaper, with windows classic style, filled with e-postits and documents.

Regarding the documents organization issue, i think it entirely dpends on the person's preference. I for one, despise winxp start menu, it's too huge, and never use the programs menu there, takes too much time :P For programs, I prefer to use the quick launch (my task bar has two levels (top for quick launch and bottom for windows) and is set on autohide). My desktop holds documents and images i need quick access, either from an open dialog (its easy to press the "go to desktop" button, and much faster than the tree) or when windows starts; that also means there is a decent amount of icons in there.

Yeah, I quite agree with Alevice, to each his preference, to quote my words:
my way is:

Plus lan was maybe kidding and in reality, has a super clean desktop (after all, which pic is the real one?)
It's just that after years of spending time structuring, maintaining, organizing, classyfying files, I find that this classification worked for me.

And I am glad somebody once gave me the "messy spot" tip which led me to be able to find my files quickly.
I had computer users remove the "my comp" & "network places" from theyre desktops, some browse their pc using windows exlporer exclusively, others remove explore.exe altogether
as a graphical environment. To each his own really.

A tiny detail about my organisation: in my mind, the sequence is human => media types => media related activity => applications and file types associated to activity => activity
So when I want to do "2d graphics" of any kind, I immediately relate it to the proper locations and paths.

It is nothing brilliant at all, just easy to use and relate to for ME.

I haven't customized anything on my computer since I rebuilt it and lost everything recently. My old Desktop was Dark Portal from WoW. Either that or Mind Circus that was posted by... uh... Nimrod(raw) wasn't it? I had a regular selection of fractals that I had taken a liking to but alas... most are gone.

My preferred method of organization from my desktop is to create a new toolbar and point it at a folder full of shortcuts. Efficient Man's Start Menu... Show me what I want... not all that other crap. In point of fact, I also point a new toolbar to my working directories. That way my active files and programs are available at all times. Not to mention hot keying programs and voice activation (which I need to set up again).
