So, I am putting togher some recent drawings for a portfolio for a couple of art schools I am trying to get into... these are not all finished... but I am runnin out of time for submission... and it has been ages since I have actually pushed a pencil around on a piece of paper. Its an odd feeling. Thoughts? Comments?

Have you got anything else to show? I mean, for a start, what kind of branches are you willing to study? If you are going to do academic drawing only that's a good start, but there isn't really enough there to enter a general school of art... You have probably thought about this before, but just in case you haven't: you should have works on various material and techniques, ideally between 3 and 5 techniques.
Some of your drawings here are really nice (like reiso, I quite like the bloke on the left in your double portrait one), and perhaps keep the hand one as well as the last one which is slightly different in style.
But again, you should have paintings or photos or anything else to show along with these drawings; and I don't think it is necessary to submit all these drawings, as they are not that different one from another.
Hope this helps...

*agrees with kimson* you need to have some varity in you folio, mix it up with different medium but keep it taylored to the course you trying for. And remember that most art schools look for creativity rather than just technical talent.

love the hand, and the fishie to

yah... I have some digital paints and portraits I plan on putting in... as well as a water color. Should add some color. heh. In general I think they want to see how well ya can draw, and see if you are teachable... I think... but yah, creativity.... and mix it up... Righto. Onward Ho!

I think one important thing in a portfolio is revealing yourself to the reviewer. I just got back from portfolio day, and one thing they said when helping me pick-and-choose pieces for my portfolio was: choose the pieces that best represent you. SFAI and SAIC both completely discarded figure drawings, and even schools like RISD payed attention to them only in developing ideas.

For example check out the first two images here http://spacetrash.unicornmeat.net/.

quick example from the top of my head, but sometimes studies can fall flat. The best example I can find is modernist literature. The style is exacting and demanding, specific and detailed, and it takes a certain content to excel the work. That's why Of Human Bondage, In Cold Blood, or East of Eden succeed as literature, because they develop an idea, but ALSO exhibit mastery of form.

Good luck!
