It took me some serious amount of time but now i am near the finishline with this little project of me.
My laptop is now very usable as an webdesign machine. And it is pretty responsive too for such an old beast. So what did i do?
First i tried a couple of linux versions like slack (good but i wanted more), ubuntu (too slow), gentoo (very nice but a lot of compile time..), Red-Hat 7.2 (too old) then i found Archlinux which is a very simple and pretty fast to run install and .
This i combined with the Xorg-X11 package and the following programs:
-Xfce4 (complete desktop environment)
-Firefox 1.5 (with a shipload of extensions)
-Inkscape 0.43 (vector drawing program)
-Bluefish (html/css editor)
-Apache & Php
-Gimp (there realy is not much choice in this department)
-Abiword
And finaly i added Photoshop 5.5 (old but very nice) which is running through wine.
Photoshop seems to run easily with wine but i did not test it very thoroughly yet so maybe somewhere there is a nasty surprise for me...however it runs. There are still some tweaks to be made and i like to try some other apps, but the basics system is up and running.
Other apps i like to try are:
-Krita without the koffice.
-Quanta
As you see there is no sign of either KDE or Gnome though there are some Gnome libraries installed.
In the next couple of days i will write a longer article and post it on my website so everyone who likes to do so can folow my footsteps

I checked out Quanta Plus recently and it's a truly excelletn product for Web developement. it's the only editor I've found outside of Dreamweaver that has CSS completion, which saves so much time it's just not funny. Can't recommend it enough.

Cheers,
