Yeah, they're taking over the virtual software market before Microsoft or Apple can even get their hands on it.

Do you realise that Google have bought Writely, an online word processor, it's excellent too!

Kind of pointless if you ask me.

There has been a ton of buzz over this (and Writely) but if simply going offline is enough to make the document unusable, I have to question the value of the program. Google does an excellent job of hyping products with their invitation system of promotion, but in the end I don't see either of these products being an improvement over Microsoft's.

I think the point is that nowadays you needn't be offline. Sure there are some circumstances where you'll have no connection, but th emajority of proffesionals with a use for this software will find themselves with a connection option nearby, be it in theirs or a clients office, an internet cafe, or a wifi hotspot. The important thing here is that you don't need your computer, anyone will do, and sharing and updating is so easy and involving.

Neither seems very useful to me.

At least, neither seem to offer any additional features that would make me choose Writely or Google Spreadsheets over Word and Excel. The dependency on internet availability is a huge deterrent for me, not to mention I'm in no rush to place all of my business documents on (1.) someone else's server and (2.) online. The "ease" of sharing is probably what I like least about it. I couldn't imagine sending out an email to a customer or vendor with instructions on how to create an account and log into my spreadsheet when I could simply send the spreadsheet.

Thats my $.02 anyway.

I've had a ton of times to share a spreadsheet or allow editing by many others.

Also you can download sheets as an .xls for clients.

That and I think you could trust google.

My grandad kept all his money in a mason jar buried in the yard and divested in mattress secret truths be known. I keep mine in checking, savings, 401k.

And yeah, google (and all other OS spreadsheet apps these days) read and write MSO formats

I really don't see a big use for this either.

There are so many options available for easy sharing of documents, I don't see the need here. Flash drives, hand helds, remote networking, and the like are far more useful in accomplishing these tasks, IMO.

That said, I can't see these kind of online apps going away - I'm sure there will be a large market for them overall. Just not the way I would prefer to do things.

This is the way computing is going I think, the network being the computer. It's cheaper to roll out to end users, cheaper and easier to maintain. more portable. It's big money for companys small and large to implement all the hardware, OS's, networks, centralized services etc etc. This kind of computing saves a ton of that money to be spent elsewhere so in my opinion, it will happen. THere's a lot of big players ramping it up already including google and MS and a bunch of other little satellites. The open document xml format got certified as the standard before and over MS's version that they were lobbying hard for so I see that as another step in this direction.

For business and those home users that do light office, email, web surf I'd think they'd be moving that way quickly but it will take a while before Industrial Light and Magic or even DL-44 types go there for all the apps and power we like on the desktop.

Well not you but think! All the relatives that you take tech support calls for... You'd just have to make sure their connection, OS and browser is ok then say "give it a minute, looks like a google glitch" Heaven!

I look it in the same way than a wiki. It prevents versions conflicting. Then again, I don't think that the need for mutliple individuals who are not in the same network already to edit an spreadsheet has happened to me.

It isn't as though I think Google will do something malicious with my information. I just question:

- Where will Writely, Google Spreadsheets, and Google itself be in a years time? It must have been a drag for users of .Mac to learn the email address they had been using free of charge for years will now cost $99. There are no assurances Google wont lose its dominance on the search engine market and suddenly either (1.) charge for this service or (2.) discontinue it entirely.

- Will Google be the target of legal trouble or hackers who bring down the network for an extended period of time?

- If these services go down, what sort of priority is given to bringing them back online?

These are just some of the few serious reasons why I wouldn't want my information on someone elses server.
