found out the other day about Opera9 on slashdot. Was wondering when it would be coming out. I've been using the Beta for what seems like a year
I like how they put the widgets as a menu instead of that funky tab thing in the middle of my screen.
I never used opera before until i was getting frustrated with FF and it's "leaking". I know _Mauro had talked about this a few times but until I experienced it for myself a few times....I didn't worry about it.
Thanks Grumble. I've never used Opera before so I've just downloaded and installed it and am now using it to peruse the Asylum and to write this post.
I like the way it looks and feels so far. Where Firefox was using 84,408 K as it stands now, with the same amout of tabs open, Opera is using 30,672 K, but I have not had Opera open and running as long as I have Firefox running today.
Oh crumbs! What was my password, heh, going to have to have a few guesses.
Whoa! Good to see those three or four brain cells I still have are still functioning. As I was posting the above I accidentally Alt clicked my mouse while moving it and discovered I had used a mouse gesture and returned to my previous page. Not only that but when I tried to post again Opera told me I had just used a mouse jester, err, I mean gesture and then told me it was preventing a double post...brilliant
I do like this browser.
+ content block ( bye bye Ad Sense, Intellitext and all those crap )
+ Create search ( try to right-click on a search field )
+ Site preferences ( if ever a site dares to open a popup, I'll disable everything I can )
I now like Opera a lot, but the installer is cheap to say the least.
ten thumbs down, and all my toes as well, for the wreckage while moving from Op 9 beta to Op 9, I lost my...
- bookmarks
- profiles
- widgets
- skins
- settings
That really sucked, why bother making a beta?
More thumbs down on the bittorrent client, it's very intrusive, I have my own advanced client and Op is "hiding" it.
Some thumbs down on resuming downloads, it doesn't work all the time.
Thumbs up on:
- the relative stability. It leaks. Less than other browsers. Firefox being a mem hog, and IE. What is IE already?...
- the overall intuitivity, user friendliness.
- the widgets.
- the speed and clever caching.
- shortcut urls (g => google and stuff like that)

aeh... beta. Does not upgrade to full product.
But: Simply coping the profile data did the trick.
I admit that it could have been seamless - but hey, you (and I) are the one(s) using beta software for production.
Thanks for the critiques.
People at Opera are aware that the upgrade can/should be improved ( especially regarding the import of the mails from M2 )
Heck on friday, I even had a bad taste of broken FireFox extension. I had installed a custom toolbar for IRC, and it made the "Create Search" option disappear from the contextual menu. Hopefully Tarquin fixed it in a snap but that sort of things must also be addressed.
oooohhhh... I just figured out the new search deal. that rocks out. and the content block is super keen. I been wanting one of those for about 3 years... but you know... lazy.
reisio: Oh, thanks, I didn't know that.
When did they added that ? I can't see it mentionned in the release notes of 1.0 -> 1.5.0.4 and don't remenber having seen it in 1.0.x
FWIW I can't stand Opera's default GUI and some of the keyboard shortcut
Actually I HATE the single key shortcuts. But well I know some people who love them and hate Ctrl|Shift|Alt+something shortcuts.
The first thing I do when I install a version of Opera that I'm gonna use more often than not is to install the Tango CL skin, tweak a bit the toolbars and shortcuts so it looks like this. I shouldn't have to do that, but I guess some people do the same with FireFox, Safari, ...
Feature wise, there is two things I miss from Firefox :
- the Shift+Enter and Ctrl+Shift+Enter shortcut when entering a URL.
- the EditCSS extension. Editing the CSS file and reloading the pages from the cache is not as convenient.
Could you elaborate? I'm currently a summer intern at Opera Software (and of course, poi works here too), so all suggestions/opinions are nice.
It's difficult to elaborate. It's not one thing or another, it's not any particular functionality. The whole feel of the program just doesn't sit well with me...
It feels clunky, akward. And the look of everything just seems heavy and....off...
I've tried over and over for years to use it, and just can't.
And I *REALLY* hate the way the scrollbar lights up when I hover over it

I have to echo DL's sentiments.
I have nothing against Opera that I can nail down.
It is just that...I find it more comfortable and easier to use FF.
There are even some features in Opera that I find truly cool - like having the URLs of old websites, etc that I have visited up at the top - but actually using Opera feels like being in an alien land for me.
Sorry I cannot be more helpful in describing why I don't like Opera. It just "feels" wrong.

I've been giving it a test run, too, the last few days. Have to say that after some customizing, I now like it quite a bit more than initially.
Some of my pros / cons (in no partivualr order and surely not in any way complete as there's much I haven't tested yet)..
Pro
- smooth scrolling
- mouse gestures built-in
- WAND button (not a huge difference in functionality to FF, but I love it, still)
- status info right inside the address bar, no separate status bar
- speedy rendering (might be prejudice, though, I'm not sure )
- "paste & go" and context menu option "go to url" when there's some text selected
- downloads / "transfers" inside a tab
- some cool themes (love the "dapper" one)
Contra
- lots of special effects active by default, need to find the setting poi mentioned
- default toolbar setup (3 separate search fields?? and the floating bar beneath the url field - to me, the main thing that just felt wrong, though I only noticed how much it bugged me after I had it disabled for a bit!)
- extensions only as "widgets" - I kinda miss my gmail notifier, adsense stats, IE view, fireFTP, color picker...
- Poor German translation in some spots ("Paneele" for panels sounds *so* wrong......)
- flickering favicons (on the tabs and beneath the URL, happens when I move across any kind of graphical menue with hover effects)
Another thing I'd really like to see is an easy way to have all bookmarks synchronized with del.icio.us as Flock does it. Doesn't work too well there yet, but I think the Opera folks could get this right =) If done well, that would be a reason for switching...
What I'm not sure about at all are those new widgets things.... I think I just much prefer the "classic" extension system Firefox and Flock have.
In the end the greatest hurdle IMO is the amout of customizing that is required to make it work and feel the way you expect, and while it's great that you can customize almost every bit of Opera this is probably not what most people want to do after installing it, or even expect to be able to do... As a countermeasure, I think it might have been cool to just ask the user what they want their browser to look like - colorful & fresh "Opera" style, or rather something more "classic" without floating toolbars, fading UI controls, etc.
