Since poi seems to be slacking, I'll mention this

Not as large an upgrade as 1.5-->2.0 for Firefox or 6.0-->7.0 for Internet Explorer maybe, but the main change - fraud protection - is common to all three upgrades. And I just love the speed of that scripting engine!

It's nice to know that people are becoming more aware of security issues with web browsing.

As much as I like Opera, the browsers and the company, I have a personal conflict of interrest. I would feel guilty of spam if I open a thread every time we unleash a browser/tool/site.

I'm in holiday. You actually learn me that 9.10 has been released ... not that it really matters when you have access to the builds on about any platform.

1.5 to 2.0 for Firefox was a pathetic upgrade to the GUI...I think there were all of two tiny tiny improvements to the rendering engine added.

poi: Well, the Opera Desktop Team blog gives pretty much anyone access to so recent builds I as a tester could almost as well go download their weeklies as use the internal builds...

I'd love to get my hands on a build with futhark instead of linear_b to see what Lars T Hansen and Chris Pine have achieved. Seeing how much input LTH has made in the ECMAScript 4 wiki, I suspect it's going to to rock. And beat SpiderMonkey at pretty much everything, as linear_b already does :)

The desktop team blog provides only a weekly build of the desktop browser. There's much more than the desktop version of Opera : mobile, mini, game consoles, ...

In the log you pasted, Brendan is Brendan Eich, the inventor of JavaScript and CTO of Mozilla ? But clearly I think Opera will be the first browser with implementing a significant part of EcmaScript 4 since the Mozilla dudes said they won't have it until FireFox 3 or 4, that is at least one more year.

Of course, but I'm just a member of [spectrans] and [mac-elektra] so I don't have access to the internal builds for the rest of it. And I'd not be able to use the mobile or game console builds in any case :)

Firefox 3 has been in development since Firefox 2 branched in August, 2005. The first alpha has in fact been released. The major JavaScript changes (1.8 or 1.9) aren't there yet, of course... But they say Firefox 3 will be released WITHIN a year, and considering the speed of upgrades to SpiderMonkey since Brendan woke the ECMA TG1 up from whatever cryochamber it's been in since Netscape's demise, I wouldn't be surprised if we get JavaScript 1.9 at the least, and maybe even 2.0, within that time frame. Mozilla is kinda limited at the moment by having a hideously Netscape-corporate-politics-bloated architecture to fight against while developing. (It's at least not a 23MiB everything-including-the-kitchensink browser any more). Development speed is limited by the fact they MUST do major redesigns of a lot of systems - SVG, XBL, XUL, the replacement of their current rendering architecture with Cairo, the clear separations of Gecko into XULRunner and applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird, Seamonkey, Sunbird, Nvu etc. written to use that. (In fact, I can see how Apple's choice of KHTML/KJS was wise - massive code bloat isn't good for companies profiled for being innovative. Mozilla has a harder time cleaning their code base up than Apple have implementing the missing features.)

So, of course, I expect Opera to crank out the first ECMAScript 4 engine just as soon as the spec goes final. And JavaScriptCore turning to ES4 just ahead of SpiderMonkey. But as Brendan noticed, the question is as always: What about Microsoft?

Yeah, I just installed Opera Mini on my Palm TX, but it's garbage...

Although it looks really cool, I can't for the life of me get it to work for more than two page requests. I maxed out the memory on the requests on the VM for it an everything.

It just don't work!
