I'm planning a little work on the asylum in the up coming days - anybody have any features they'd really like to see?

Current list:

 • [Flash] attribute
 • changes to the rss feed (mostly have it link to the 'last post' of a thread, actually).

so long,

Well, I was going to suggest checking why iGoogle wouldn't eat the rss feed, but I just had it added successfully, must have been a year or so since my last try.

So thank you in advance for all the effort put into proactively fixing this my #1 pet issue that I'm just about now probably mentioning for the first and last time ever.

Could be nice to add a permalink button along the and or to easily link to a given post instead of looking for an ID in the source code of the page.

Issues I've come across:

 • After you submit an edit, the URL is formatted wrong with an "&". (example: http ://www.ozoneasylum.com/30218?&mode=0&offset=5)
 • Quickchanges may display two of the same day when they are actually different days around DST change. (example: You will see 2 yesterdays when they are really two different days.)

Also don't forget: Font size

That's everything I can think of for now, I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

Edit: Fixed list tags and stuff.

Hell yeah font size! let's welcome in 2008.

I use Netvibes for my Ozone RSS feeds, and with most other feeds I get a preview of the post too, but not with Ozone, I'm not sure if this is something that should/could be passed through with the RSS data, or if it's something in the setup my end.

Cheers,

Can we also get the pages of a thread displayed up ABOVE the actual thread as well, so that one does not have to scroll down to click on the next page, for example?

i think every modern browser can do [CTRL]+[+] so i think there is not really a need for that.

What about editable Thread name/title ?

Don't know much about Flash but wouldn't the [flash] tag cover most cases including youTube, Blip.tv, Vimeo, Google video, ... ? or are Flash movies in general not welcome in the orange padded walls of ours ?

Also, posts being edit-able for 4 hours, I'm not sure about a preview feature.

Grumble: I believe the problem with the fonts is that the default size seem to make small texts unreadable in some browsers/platforms. That's not a sane default. Let's bring a bit of sanity in this mad house

[edit] All major browsers have the CTRL+mousewheel shortcut to zoom. Safari singles itself out by only affecting the font sizes. [/edit]

You're using ff2 and not ff3, right? I think they changed this for ff3. (For the record, I prefer the text-scaling-only zoom feature.)

Usenet (newsgroups) offers a terrific functionality to its communities, a wonderful concept.

It's called the killfilter.

Usage:

quote:
<welcome to my killfilter, [expletive optional argument]>
<PLONK>

The plonk is not case sensitive. Using All Caps can be employed for emphasis.

Can this function be implemented in a forum? In this forum?

Why would you need it?

I think it's a simple way to end the discord that seems to poison the Asylum from time to time.
And because it is user specific/defined, it does not break the thread except for the owner of the killfilter.

Summary: everyone gets to get heard by those who want to hear them. those who don't are exempt. flame wars, dissent, bad blood, and pollution will decrease significantly.

A few months back I suggested a light weight modification of the markup of the Asylum, namely adding an attribute with the userId of the poster in the container node of each post, accompanied with a tiny script ( that I wrote and only need a bit of testing to fine tune the UI and fix the eventual cross browser glitch ) creating a simple UI to shun on/off ( hide by mean of CSS ) users at will and store the info in a cookie.

Of course this won't be part of the logic of the Asylum and thus will not reflect in the feeds but it is a very low cost solution.

The question is : is the problem big or recurrent enough to deserve being dealt with ? Probably not. Luckily trolls and attention whores are quite rare in here. TP wasn't psyched about this shunning feature back then.

Thanks Poi
I'm sure TP had good reasons and it is his decision, however I find it goes a little too far when one poster threatens another one. Doesn't everyone here realize that this is a public forum? That employers and potential employers can view these posts? What kind of impression would they be left with? A pretty negative one that's for sure. I don't participate in these threads, I don't take sides, but I think some measures should be taken that protect free speech, discussion, and even arguments without name calling and physical threats.

Also, this link is worth reading again:

The above boilerplate is well intended and sounds pretty clear as well.

Sure. People violating the TOS of Asylum should be warned then banned. But let's face it these measures are useless against serial trolls and attention whores. Absolutely nothing can prevent them from registering new accounts, using a proxy to bypass an IP ban, and repeat history again and again.

The only semi-efficient way would be to have some form user rating, and an option for the Mad Scientists to mark a user as an alias of another one and make them share the same rating, maybe with a penalty. But that's more work, for little added value as the signal to noise ratio is quite good. The vast majority of users do behave and manage to ignore the odd ones.

Funny.

I said the same thing *many* years ago.

In regard to the same poster, even.
Imagine that.

I decided to forfeit my admin status when the Doc had no problem with the threats and other such behavior...

However, I think the only actual solution at this point comes down to one simple thing: don't feed the trolls.
The only way this poster gets anywhere is by people giving him attention. And like a young child, it does not matter whether the attention is positive or negative. He will take whatever route gets him the most attention, which is clearly negative in this case.
