This is a newer version of the XP windows genuine advantage. I have known of people getting their computers from some Mom and Pop shop with cracked windows on it. Shame but it's the customer that gets jerked over for this.

I have no choice but to get on with it. This year we expect a substantial portion of our clients will be asking specifically for Windows 7 - something we never had to fear with Vista due to (some unfair) bad publicity.

Thanks for the heads up though. Part of my roll out process will include stamping on shit like this.

On that note, from what I can see, Windows 7 is going to be just as problematic as Vista for imaging and licensing purposes, and I'm not looking forward to it. I've taken the decision (and coerced my employer into agreement) to de-centralise the imaging solution in favour of using an on-drive restoration system, and only keep long-term external backups in case of drive replacement.

I've been dual-booting Ubuntu since Edgy and only boot into windows rarely. Lucid Lynx is only 15 days away!

Ups and Downs-
[*] Honestly, Photoshop in Wine looks ugly and doesn't work as smoothly as native. In Gnome, ALT+click moves the entire window, which can get a little annoying in Photoshop.
[*] Karmic (current version) made the sound on Vendetta a little scratchy at first, though it's fixed now.
[*] Open Office.org is *not* MS Office, then again, I like it better that Office2007's ribbon, so ymmv. Make sure you check your documents on MS Office before you send them out, though, it may not be as faithful as you may expect. Alternately, just send out .pdf's, which is what I do.

[*] The workflow on Gnome is soo much better. From the 'Windows on top' to the Compiz cube goodness, everything just *seems* easier. Everyone says the cube is a toy until they use it a while, the psychological effect is that you have 4 monitors (or however many), for me.
[*] Installing most app you could ever want via Synaptic is a snap. I just read about a tool somewhere, type sudo apt-get install shiney_new_tool and it's mine. I could also just check the box in Synaptic, but I find it faster.
[*] You can try the system just by booting from a USB, without installing anything- you risk nothing!

There are many more, but I thought I'd give you some tips as a heads-up. I'm currently installing VirtualBox to run Win7 from a window in Ubuntu. I'll let you know how it goes.

P.S. Whenever I install a new Ubuntu system, I have a line of apt that installs all the apps, games, tools, etc I ever use/want. I just install the OS, copy-paste the line, and go to sleep. If anyone wants it, let me know.

I encourage you to try it, the difference is remarkable.

If you like the cube you should try gnome-shell thats what i use and, even if its only beta by now, its absolutly great

I gotta say I do love Linux, have been using it for years myself now, but I'm impressed with Windows 7 other than this update shenanigans.

No matter how much I persevered with Wine I still couldn't get the games I owned to work perfectly, but this was mostly to do with ATi and their lack of support for Linux.

However with Steam coming to Max OS X this April, I'm thinking that my next purchase will be a MacBook Pro, I won't need Windows for serious gaming anymore, and will still benefit from Unixey goodness, albeit a slightly walled garden version, but I can handle that!

On Karmic, I used this line-

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras vlc mplayer mencoder build-essential geany codeblocks glade anjuta xchat frozen-bubble chromium hedgewars banshee libxine1-ffmpeg ubuntu-tweak xchat-gnome wine openarena stellarium celestia blender bootchart sysv-rc-conf conky compizconfig-settings-manager emerald abiword gimp pidgin transmission-gtk

If some of those don't apply anymore, I just take them off the line and paste it again. You'd think I'd have it as a shell script by now..
