The SMIL Tutorial - a good introduction to SMIL, this page offers a java applet that will render all of the SMIL code for you, but I'd suggest using quicktime instead.

w3c SMIL 2.0 specification - Not a tutorial but a reference manual to all things SMIL.

Center for Instructional Technology Accessibility -- Using SMIL to Associate Captions with an Existing Movie - This shows how to add text to quicktime movies to add titles to movies, or to add "close captioning for the hearing impared" It's also not a bad introduction to SMIL, using quicktime.
