Topic awaiting preservation: CD Walkman VS. MP3 Walkman (Page 1 of 1)

I'm wondering what brand and which to go with. I hear the MP3 is best as no skipping or carrying CDs. I've been working out and walking to get ready for summer and want music. I want to go this week and buy on or the other. What brand and which type do you think is best ?

It skips really badly when im walking playing mp3 cds and i dont even understand why. So i wouldnt recommend this if you walk a lot.

I have a Sony CD Walkman with G-protection... and I must say that it rocks. Their G-protection works much better than any other anti skip deal out there. I have jumped on a trampoline with the thing and it didn't skip.
THat is just for CD's though.

As far as MP3's, they wont skip because the music is stored on memory. I would not mind an Ipod...

                                   

For music players and player accessories, I always go with Sony. Sony is 100% compatible for burnt CD's, and almost every new sony CD player has ESP. I have a Sony Walkman ESPMAX D-E220, works wonders for my CD's.

I have a SONY MiniDisc player. It was a great investment. I bring it everywhere with me and it never skips. I'm not sure if theres any actual advantages or disadvantages to the MiniDisc player, but I love mine.

point is.... working out and walking is just way too much active work.

lol, all joking aside... urmmm .. mp3 player wouldn't skip and it will hold MUCH more music. IPOD owns too. as someone suggested.

I use a Dell Axim X5 400mhz Pocket PC wiht a 256Mb SD card full of (loadaboe) music from my collection of CDs and Radio station promo MP3's. That way I can compute and listen to music on the move ...

I've been hearing lots of good things about the iPod, and I believe they recently released a version that's PC compatible so I think that's a solid consideration.

And it's basically a portable hard disk drive so skipping isn't an issue at all.

I also bought a CD/mp3 player (a player that plays CD's burnt in digital format with mp3's on them) a couple of years back and I've gotten a lot of good use out of it. It loads an mp3 almost completely into RAM so there theoretically no skipping, however, you do have to wait for the mp3 to load before you start running but that's only a few seconds so it's not a big worry. Also, if you're playing your mp3 files sequentially or if you're playing in shuffle mode and don't manually skip to the next track it shouldn't skip at all. I've dropped the damn thing and it didn't miss a beat. The songs are usually buffered while the current song is playing so if you manually skip, you'll get skipping while it loads the new mp3 into memory.

All in all, I'd check out the mp3 hard disk based players just because they can hold a lot of music and personally my mp3 player gets transferred regularly between my home stereo (via headphone jack to RCA cable adapter) and my car (via tape adapter).

The newer models may have solved this issue, but I get two hours MAX with a brand new set of batteries so they are power hogs. I even managed to drain an entire car battery (via lighter AC adapter) in an hour.

My girlfriend has this little toy: Iriver slimx/imp350. It's the thinest cd-mp3player you could ever get. Sound quality is amazing and even the radio is ok. But the best thing is the power maintenance, the iriver people don't lie about the 23 hours...
Besides you get an extra external battery pack so if running out off juice you get some batteries at the corner from the street. It's the most complete mp3-player i ever did see.
And i am not getting paid to say this. And since CD-roms are the cheapest medium for mp3's that would be a good choice.

Hope I'm not too late to the party. It's been a busy week.

I just love my Sony D-CJ01 CD/MP3 Walkman. It reads CD-RWs and plays MP3s from them. It has about a three-minute anti-skip buffer. The batteries last forever because it spins up the disk just long enough to suck 3 minutes worth to data into the buffer then shuts off the motor for the next 2:45. It charges the optional rechargable batteries without having to remove them. Just plug in the charger.

It's also smaller than most CD walkmans. It easily fits into the front or back pockets of my 501s leaving room for change, keys, hands, etc. (Is that a walkman in your pocket...)

My only complaint is it has a hard time with Variable-Bit-Rate MP3s when the bit rate swings wildly in a short span. Poor thing just doesn't have the processing power to keep up. Workaround is to use either Average-Bit-Rate or a standard fixed-bit-rate, which most people use anyway.

I find the advantages of standard, removable media far outweigh the the anti-skip advantages of the pure RAM players or the hard-disk players. It's far easier to swap CDs and CD-RWs with friends than it is to install drivers on everyone's PC you know.

I dunno...I'm pretty happy with my MP3cd player...It was only 50 bucks, and holds about 100-200 songs.

I used to have one, but I dropped it one day and it broke. I can't find the company or the product on-line. I think when I dropped it, it must have messed up the positioing of the lens, cause the circutry still works, it's just it doesn't read the CD's any more.

Thing was only 50 bucks.

I own an older Sony Model similar to this but mine play?s only cd?s and not MP3.
I?ve used mine about every day for the past three years. I?ve dropped it off my desk onto my hardwood floor more times than I can remember, dropped it on the airplane a few times, had it fall out of my backpack a few times.... and through all the horrible things it put it through I can still listen to continuous music while riding by bike with my leg knocking it around as I peddle.
