I will only say this: if you didn't get the "point" (in quotes because Drac is right--there are so many) of the first movie, then I doubt the second movie will be any more understandable.

It opens on the 15th here... next Thursday. Yes, I will be going to see it.

And of course they show the movies in English! I would torch the theater if they made me watch the Matrix dubbed in Korean (or LOTR, or any other movie for that matter). Fortunately, though, they have subtitles. Well, they're not really subtitles, since they are on the side of the screen and not the bottom, but I suppose that's close enough.

It's a movie. You can poke holes in the logic of any movie if you want to. Heck, reality isn't even all that logical most of the time.

The first step in enjoying any work of fiction, be it a book or a movie, is "suspension of disbelief." You can refuse to suspend your disbelief, of course, and nitpick at little details and flaws of logic, but you will never truly be able to enjoy the work.

I mean, come on... Keanu Reeves as the savior of humanity? We're talking major suspension of disbelief here from square one. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

very good point suho. the point isn't that you have to entirely believe that everything could/would happen, but that at that moment what you're seeing is happening. spielberg is (usually) a master at this. the matrix, btw, wasn't necessarily an easy film to "get", it took till my third viewing (which was, incidentally, still in the theater) to really wrap my brain around everything. even now as i watch it again, read the philosophy articles that were posted earlier, discuss it with friends, etc., i understand bits and pieces even more.

another interesting companion to the suspension of disbelief was something fascinating that was talked about in the commentary on the ghostbusters dvd (which is outstanding for anyone interested). they discussed what they called "the sliding scale of reality", the basic concept being that if they introduced unusual things to you a little bit at a time and got you to accept them you'd accept more and more as the story progressed. in ghostbusters they start with the sighting of the ghost in the library and the eggs frying on the apartment counter; by the end of the film you've got a giant marshmellow man terrorizing new york and that seems completely normal i think the matrix employed similar techniques as well.

Yup, that's very true. The "sliding scale of reality." I like that. Of course, in the Matrix, there was a bit of jarring weirdness when Neo first finds out what's going on, but I think that's the idea--you're supposed to be a little taken aback, just like Neo is.

Actually, I never saw the Matrix in the theaters... I never really thought too much about seeing it until my brother started going on and on about how awesome it was. I didn't see it until later on, on video. I think I've only actually seen the whole movie twice. I will be getting the DVD, though, when we get our DVD player and home theater system this summer (somehow seeing the Matrix on my 15 inch computer screen with my tiny little speakers just doesn't sound like all that much fun, so I'm going to wait).

Word on the street is that there's a Matrix Revolutions teaser showing immediately after Matrix: Reloaded. I don't know whether it's true or not, but if you watch this (direct link to 13MB mpeg), you can draw your own conclusions. No particular spoilers, except that if it IS from Matrix Revolutions, it gives away who survives to the third movie. Everything else is dopetastic, but not startling -- just the usual agents, robots, kung fu, gunfire, and techno.

Gah, us aussies have to wait till the 16th.

Still, I'm a also really excited about the computer game, Enter the Matrix, which I believe is being released at roughly the same time as the Movie. Apparently they made about an hours worth of film just for the video game, which isn't just a re-hack of the movies, it's a whole other storyline that runs parellel to Maxrix Reloaded and you get to play some of the not so critical characters from the actual movie.

It's the first time a movie based computer game has ever had this much support and hands on work form the actual film makers themselves. It's also one of the few movie games that doesn't simply try and re-create the movies events for you to play through. They even created the character models from 3D scans of the flesh'n'blood actors and skinned them with photographs, much like the semi-photoreal approach used in Max Payne. If they manage to pull off a decent game then hopefully other movie based games will do the same in the future.

My friend just saw the movie last night, and he said that it was only slightly better than Star Wars Episode 2(Which, in his opinion, is not good at all). I can't validate his statement until I've seen it, but from what I hear, it's not that good. Just a heads up warning for those hoping for a godly movie. He said that it was more like a 2 hour long trailer for the 3rd movie.

(I guess they kinda forgot about the more advanced special effects that were used.) Zion was described as 'just another star wars set'. Their opinion was that the movie would only be interesting for 'the popcorn people'.

Okay, here's a caution:

The Matrix Reloaded is an action movie.

If you go to see it, and it's just a bunch of action sequences stitched together with some fairly unimportant plot, well, that's what action movies are. Are they bloody incredible action sequences? YES! Is the plot pretty darned thin in comparison to the first one or, presumably, the third? Yes.

If you go into the movie expecting it to be more than an action movie -- and I'm not going to say you shouldn't -- you probably will be disappointed.

But if you just want an sensory overdose of kung fu, car chases, superhuman leaps, and visual effects that have never been seen in a movie before, the movie delivers like FedEx.

I disagree with the above.

Yes, it's an action movie, but the plot is not thin. It isn't just a bunch of action sequences stitched together. It's an action movie with a continuing plot of what is reality, what is destiny... how are we controlled by the choices we make, and are there any real choices? The action sequences are amazing... especially the one on the freeway. The thought put into the plot is also very impressive, and it will all fit together in the end.

ok, i've seen it twice. the first time (last night) i was very inbetween about it. the second time (this morning) i liked it. why? i think because initially i expected a different kind of movie, i expected the same style and feel of the first matrix, which it doesn't have, but then again it couldn't. the things in the first film aren't new anymore, it was about neo discovering what the matrix is. in the second film we're getting a dirtier look at things from the inside of the real world and starting to learn the reason why they're there. a lot of really strong ideas presented at a much faster pace than in the first film; whereas initially the only real question was absorbing the concept of the matrix and escaping from it, this one is much more about the how's and why's of the matrix.

i think we're going to see a backlash from general audiences who go in expecting a clone of the first film, but we shall see...

I have seen it ! I have seen it !

And... Matrix Reloaded is a great moment, really. First, the action moments are just...incredible. I don't think any movie will do better than that before a few years. But there is more than just action is Matrix Reloaded. At my great surprise, some ghotism and lyrism appeared, coexisting with technology... That is a really interesting mix. And furthermore, Matrix is wonderful on the graphical plan. I'm sure every artist here will find it fantastic on that point. Personally, my eyes were in heaven There was some philosophy too in Matrix, and, as the first opus the ideas were really interesting, though not enough developped in my opinion.

I've already spoke about the frenzy about this movie... And even if there is nothing comparable to what happened in the USA in France, i must say the people that watched it were quite fanaticals, half of the room applauded at the beginning of the movie, and at the end of the movie too. That was quite funny

A moment was especially fun for us Frenchie. At some moment in the movie, one of the characters says snidely he loves French wines, French languages, and.. French insults. Then follows a large bunch of insults. I supposed they were in French for you Americans, but that was so funny for us to hear it Really interesting ones And.. it happens again a bit later.. Ow, I guess you will see it by yourself

So my advise : watch it. I think most people here will like fore their personal reasons, some will dislike itn, but it is a good movie.

frenchie was one of the funniest parts of the movie. He's basically the worst stereotype of a french person (from here in the US) multiplied by like 10. The plot is definitly not thin. I think the people who are saying this either aren't paying attention enough, or just aren't fully comprehending the whole movie. I know a lot of people have had trouble following the movie, and I think that's the reason why people think it has such a thin plot, because they aren't really following along very well. But ya, I loved it, it's a really really great action movie with a pretty good plot and some philosophy mixed in.

(sigh) Okay, look, the reason I'm calling the plot thin is to prepare all the people who'll be going into the movie looking for the Second Coming of Christ. I want them to like the movie, and thus I want them to go into it without expecting it to be as revelatory as the first.

YES there's a plot, YES it's thought-provoking in a superficial way (I say "superficial" because I compare all sci-fi to stuff like Bruce Sterling or A. A. Attanasio), but NO the plot isn't particularly deep. The plot is not hard to understand: I've understood it, and fully understanding it I say that it's competent but not particularly groundbreaking.

What's more important, it's not as groundbreaking as the original. I didn't personally expect it to be. When I say that the plot is "thin," what I mean is that in comparison to the first (where bombs were dropping left and right), this movie is low on genuinely new plot developments. They're there, yes, and they're significant, but this movie's plot isn't nearly as full of chunky bits as the original's. What's the opposite of "full of chunky bits?"

I've seen it! The cinema was tighly packed, but it's worth it. I'm going for a second round. Who's with me?

Alright, I agree with you PT. Also the reason I said it would may be hard to understand, although I understood it just fine, is that if some of these people didn't really understand the first one they're definitley not going to understand the second. The second one is a bit more complex than the first. It basically elaborates on the first one's ideas. We should start a new thread for people who've already seen it to talk about it, I've been talking about to everyone I know who's seen it. Such a good movie...

The Magic captured in the first was lost in this movie.

I do hope they can regain it for the final, but I won't keep my hopes up.

oof.

maybe i will like it better when i awake from this after finals stupor.

Wow, I really liked that one. I didn't think the plot was weak at all.

I did think some of the fight scenes went a bit long, but I didn't really mind that either.

Great movie.

I saw The Matrix: Reloaded last night and it was great, throughout the whole movie I was thinking that it was lesser or equal to the first until it got to the scene with the Architect. That totally blew me away, and I only understood about half of what he said. After seeing it at 7:00, my friend and I snuck into the next showing and watched it twice. Then I was able to understand it a little more, with the Architect and all.

However, I think the big fight scene with all the agent smiths after the oracle, had terrible graphics. The lighting was completely off and it was nothing compared to the first movie. However, (again), the scene on the highway had excellent graphics. And morpheus with the sword was one of the best scenes in the movie. Appearantly the two dreadlocked dudes were ghosts, exiled and hidden programs that just wanted to mess around with the system. I thought the story went into great detail in the second.

My other friend who saw the movie at 10:00 on wednesday, told me to stay after the credits because it would show the trailer for Revolutions. So we did and it looked awesome, I can't wait to see Neo and Agent Smith duke it out in the rain, that looked incredibly epic and awesome.

Overall, I think the second was better than the first with the exception of that agent smith bullet-time scene.

I saw Matrix Reloaded Wednesday and then re-watched The Matrix last night. After seeing both movies this week i'm going to have to disagree with Insider. Matrix Reloaded is nowhere near as good as the first movie. I'm not saying I didn't like Reloaded, I thought it was great, just not as good as the original.

The Matrix had better pacing then Reloaded, its more of a thriller than action movie. Reloaded is pretty much wham bam all the way through.

Not only did the kung-fu fights go to long, I felt that the choreography was a bit repeatitive and uninspired. Jet-Li and Jacki Chan do 5 fights in the same movie and have them all look completely diffferent. I would have rather they trimmed 10-15 min from the various fight scenes and the "rave" and shown me the ship battle for Zion or developed the characters bit more.

Reloaded's special effects, however, are in class by themselves. I mean" Wow!". The compressing semis, Trinity's fall, that whole chase scene, the "max headroom" Neos in the background...The list goes on. That movie is an eye-candy store. And the supporting characters petty much stole the movie(Agent Smith, the Oracle, the Architect, and the frenchman - whatever his name was) and the plot developments were great.

On a seperate note have you all seen this.

You are late.

I refuse to give any comment on which movie was better until I´ve seen reloaded 3 times.
