Topic awaiting preservation: I need help naming my server. Any suggestions? (Page 1 of 1)

I just got a new server, Taobaybee says I need to name it something....

I could name it after a boat, and smash a bottle over the side of it when it finally boot with an OS. (In fact I may do that if it doesn't soon...)



I could name it after the guy I bot it off of which also just happens to be a networking acronym NAT.


Or maybe I should name it after my ex-girlfriend, because it looks so good....IN THE DARK!....

...any suggestions?

Maskkkk .. is this your first server?

I was thinking if this is your first server .. the name for it must be significant .. like it's the father or mother to all other servers you have in the future

so I thought of
Gino (means Godfather)
Papi (means father)
Nani (means Godmother)
Mamas (means Mother)

that's about all for now .. lol

personally I like Gino

Most of the admins I know like to pick a theme for their server names (as opposed to naming each one seperately). I've known some that like going for old gods like thor, apollo zeus etc. (the one I knew that used this scheme would actually try to make the god relevant in some way to the job of the box). We also named our boxes based on board games, like chess, clue othello etc.

One of my favorites is a guy who named his boxes after old San Francisco prostitutes (he's not the first with this idea though, we actually have a bunch of streets named after these ladies)

How about naming them after the Spice Girls. Makes reporting problems fun, (Dam-it Ginger Spice went down again! ")

God names appeals to me, I use ODIN, THOR, and LOKI, and FREY, Only problem is I have to add two other machines and and I am running out of easy to rember names. I my have to switch mythos or switch to the Seven Dwarfs.

Yep, themes are good. I once named our networked computers after the sisters on Keeping Up Appearances. Now mine is just Harold.

"the box with all the lights" server
"soon to be coffee table" server
"that thing i want to kick" server

if the names are too long, just make acronyms.... it looks more hardcore like that anyway

I suggest gems as a theme. Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, etc. Helps when you put lights in/paint them too. Helps the naming scheme even more

Wow it looks huge. Anything that size I usually call "Sir, yes Sir".

We named our linux boxes after the virtues (faith, hope, charity etc ...) our file servers after the 7 deadly sins (avarice, sloth, envy etc.) and (of course) our windows NT servers after natural disasters (fire, flood famine, earthquake etc ...)

So ... what OS are you gonna use ... heheheh ??

A word to the wise though Maskkkk. Have you heard the phrase "Be careful what you wish for"? Well I think the same thing may apply here too. Your server might start taking on the characteristics of the name you give it..
Play safe, how about Andre Agassi, one of the fastest and longest serving 'servers' I know.

But are cities like servers?

I recall the fact that places with really nice names always end up been terrible places to live.

For instance:

- Philidephia means "The City of Brotherly Love"

~and~

- Los Anglas means "The City of Angles"

Where as other cities with names like HELL for instance tend to be on the list of best places to live in America.
On the other hand, I live over in the Amish Country where they name towns things like Orgasm, and Blue Ball. Hey when you don't have electricity you have to do something.... If you don't believe me look at a map of Pennsivnia some time. (Yes I live here and I can't spell it byte me...)

It's big, it's grey, it's coloured, different species can and will live in it, and it's surrounded by 'rubbish" so there is only one name to use, like this famous city: Ankh-Morpork.

The most famous theme i know for servers is the asterix and obelix theme. Where obelix is the file server ...

My favourite theme however would be the discworld theme.^^
