A rhetorical question perhaps ... but maybe this time we'll know more. YES!! Eurpoes first attempt to land a research vehicly on another planet took off successfully this afternoon/evening on top of a Soyuz and is now on its way to Mars. I feel particuarly proud, not only to be part of the organisation which could develop on such a mission, but also because it was one of the first web sites I did for our Planetary explorations division ... here is the url of my site - http://www.rssd.esa.int/MarsExpress/ - it's a bit dry because we're the site for the science community, so if you want more background and "layman's science" you can try http://sci.esa.int/marsexpress/ as well.

For the news on the launch, good old aunty BBC has posted here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2955910.stm

Enjoy .. I do

That's what i call: "Landing on mars in style"

They hired a band to compose 9 notes? You Brits are strange folks.

I just hope the engineers converted from inches to cm OK this time.

Life on Mars... cool. I hope so. Blur? I was just listening to their CD lately. They used one of their songs in a promo for Starship Troopers. I hardly think we'll see any kind of action like that on Mars though. Probably just as well because it would look kind of funny fighting a bunch of algae with space marine weaponry.

Life may or may not exist on Mars, but anyone who thinks we are alone in the vastness of space is out of their mind. I truely believe we are not alone in this great universe.

A great tribute to the power of the Great British Eccentric - you couldn't create a fictional character like the Open University prof in charge of the Beagle project

As it has been led from the UK this has been discussed here for aquite a long time (its been a story I've followed with interest).

Hopefully this lower budget kind of exploration might spark a new wave of small cheap probes all over the place - always good news

Heh, yeah, why not? That's what I do when I'm bored, too.

But I'm pretty sure there's no life on Mars. At least I never saw any during all those hours spent playing Mars Lander...

"waste of space"?

Perhaps it's our job to inherit the stars? Perhaps we were meant to not waste it at all. If we are alone, which is entirely possible, then I think we ought to get busy and move on out there. What are we waiting for? The sun won't be around forever you know!

Yannah, yes, we never went to the moon *and* the world is flat as a pancake and don't let anyone else tell you different!

there was life on mars... then they all migrated to earth because it was getting too cold and all the plants died out.

[edit] yes Ruski... gagarin never went to space, and americans never landed on the moon - and the whole space program crap is just do launder the money - or rather pocket the budget money : ) it's all big hoax. right now with these 3 mars missions they're laundering the iraqi money : )

oh and they also say that the mars ice cap is carbon dioxide (dry ice) and not water.
