Ok, so this is like my 40 millionth computer trouble post, but here it goes:

I start my computer up, everythings running fine, it does all the normal proceedings, then it gets to the "select your OS" screen. I choose XP as that is the OS that I usually do homework in. It starts to start up fine, you know, with the graphical screen and the bar that goes from left to right and the XP logo up top. SUDDENLY...It stops, flashes the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH for about half a second, and restarts the computer.

I tryed starting Windows in about every mode possible (using f8), Safe mode, safe mode with logging (too see what the problem is), last good configuration etcetera, and nothing seems to either (1) give me any good information regarding the problem or (2) solve the problem.

Also, this happened out of the blue. I just shut my computer off to fix my internet connection (because we have a cable modem that likes to spontaneously disconnet us), fixed it, and went to turn my computer back on, only too have this happen.

So, any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried your other OS?

if not it could be that
you knocked your power box, this would cause it go off on on becase a lose connection could effect things,

you could of knocked your fan out of connection, this will researt your computer, at least it did when the fan on mine fell from here it ewas supposed to be and dis connected itselfs

if your other OSworks fine, then its neither of the two

What you could try is going here:

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and recovery

and disable the "restart automatically" option. This should have the effect that the BSoD remains visible until you reboot manually and maybe it gives a hint of what's wrong...

I just checked my fan and power box, and there doesn't seem to be a problem there.

The other OS's are Windows 98 SE and BeOS. Neither seem to recognize the NTFS format partition that WinXP resides in, and they work fine.

I might try calling Microsoft, but...They've never been too helpfull in the past.

Kuckus, I can't do that, as I can't even get to the Control Panel, only the "XP loading" screen.

The previous tip will be good only when you be able to get access to your computer again...

Yes, and Microsofts tech support is a joke...I was willing (to let my Dad) pay $35 for tech support, over a long-fucking-distance number, which is what it costs. Insane?! Well, I get on the line with some stupid lady who tells me something like this:

What is the problem?
Your OS won't load. Everything runs fine untill I get to the windows loading screen, when it brielfy flashes the blue screen of death and restarts the computer. I tryed booting in just about every manner possible with Advanced Boot Options. Your boot log didn't help either.

Did you restart?
Yes. Several times. Once for each boot option.

Did you boot in safe mode?
Yes, it's implyed when I told you that I booted using every boot option.

Hmm (she ponders)...Can you right click on...
I can't load Windows. Can I speak to someone else, please?

Then, in a slightly irrated voice, she transfers me to advanced technical support. The first thing that he asks me to do is to right click on the my computer icon in the top-left corner of your screen." This is when I hang up.

Anyways, this is pretty much how it went.

Well, my ranting aside, I would advise people to avoid $35 Microsoft tech support.

I have had this same sort of problem with my wife's notebook.
The only way to get if fixed was to wait some hours and then try again and then, hopefully, Windows will forget it has a problem and it will boot normally, giving you time to follow that tip.
It was some intermittent problem that I really never found the real reason. It just fixed by itself, the same way it went bad by itself.

My wife's notebook has Win2k, and it came with a restore CD, so no way to make a repair. But in our case, I think the problem is in the hardware, because it goes away and comes back very sporadically. Actually, it's been a while since the last time it failed.

:sigh:

Microsoft's tech support is just about the #1 reason I tried Linux. After being asked if I tried rebooting for the hundreth time I just decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Of course Optimum Online's tech support gives Microsoft a run for its money.
