The place that does that DNS thing for me failed to tell me that I needed to renew. They had the correct contact information but "mysteriously" nothing was ever brought to my attention. Apparently krets.net has been expired sincce 5/6/03 and I never had any idea. They want me to pay $150 bucks to them for some BS in order to get it going again.

Luckily all my files are hosted elsewhere so at least they don't have control of those. I'll be getting a new domain soon, I just haven't decided what to call it.

What a lovely way to come home from California.

Should we have a "name Kret's new domain" contest? I bet we can come up with some pretty good possibilities ~insert evil grin and laughter here~ Would anyone like to start us off?

Okay, then... dontsukrets?

Alternately, you could make it suckrets, but I don't think that's particularly helpful, either.

I personally would like to see some .foo's... enough of the .com and .net junk.

you could get Krets.org, .biz (krets personal business heh), .us, .tv and so on....

unless you just HAVE to have that .com.

Why, exactly, do you need to pay $150 for it? Couldn't you just register it through someone else? Unless someone else took the domain name, there's no reason you couldn't reregister it for a reasonable price.

But if the domain is registered in their name, then they have control over the domain and can do whatever they want. That's why it's important to make sure that the domain is registered in your name. I'm assuming that's what the problem is here. And if not, then there should be no problem reregistering it elsewhere, as Slime said.

there's a 30 day grace period and some other red tape crap that can draw out the grey zone on a domain to right around 2 months before it becomes registerable

I dunno how names4ever or whomoever has it does things but surely they're gonna let it expire if you tell them to bugger off and call them thives and that you'll just get a new name.

Then you just have to grab it when it's up in a month or 2.

Snapnames has a nice service for acquiring domains if you wanna pay someone $70 a year to keep an eye on it for when it come sup for registration and grab it when it does.

Well see, it was registered in my name but in May it expired and they failed to notify me. They gave me some crap about my contact info not being up to date even though I've changed it several times to make it accurate. When it expired in May they took ownership and for some strange reason it's just now being pulled.

So basically my domain is in a redemption period and they're saying I have to pay them $150 to get it back.

So scroo'em.

krets: Have you checked to see exactly what they've done? Have they grabbed your domain for a further year? I'd imagine it makes sensible (if ruthless) business to grab the lapsed domains for a few dollars and the sell them back for big cash - it only has to work 5-10% of the time to make it worth their while - scumbags.

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: KRETS.NET
Registrar: ABACUS AMERICA, INC. DBA NAMES4EVER
Whois Server: whois.names4ever.com
Referral URL: http://www.names4ever.com
Name Server: DNS123.HRWEBSERVICES.NET
Name Server: DNS223.HRWEBSERVICES.NET
Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 11-jun-2003
Creation Date: 06-may-2000
Expiration Date: 06-may-2003

>>> Last update of whois database: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 06:01:32 EDT <<<

NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the
registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration
date of the domain name registrant's agreement with the sponsoring
registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar's Whois database to
view the registrar's reported date of expiration for this registration.

It looks like their ownership has expired according to internic. and I think that " Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD" means that it is in the grace period between failing to renew and losing ownership ... So I tried thir site and ...

No match for "krets.net"

However, an attempt to register the domain name for myself tells me that the name is in use. I suggest just waiting 3 months, and taking it back when the internic grace period expires. At the same time, and while you're waiting, there are several other krets domains available as has already been pointed out.
