OK, this is the second time this has come up at work and I can't believe it's even an argument. (More accurately, I can't believe I'm the only one on my side on this.)

I say pirates say, "Arrr!"

Everyone else here at the station seems to think pirates say, "Arrgh!"

I have not once in my life heard a pirate character say, "Arrgh!" Listen to the sea captain on the Simpsons, for example. (Not a pirate exactly, but the same genre.)

A quick Google search for "pirates say" comes up with a lot of "Arrr," (or "Rrrr," which I believe the writers intend to be pronounced the same way) and very little "Arrgh."

It especially annoyed me when someone made a joke about a movie being rated "Arrgh." That doesn't even make sense. Arrr!

What do you think?

Pirates definitely say "Arrrr!"

I've never heard one say "Arrgh!" That's just silly.

Its Arr (with as many 'r's as the situation requires) - plain and simple, no messing around, no arguements, end of story.

You know, I must admit that I never really thought all that much about this, but hearing your argument I guess I would have to agree with you. Especially if the "gh" in "Aaarrgh" is pronounced. Honestly, I've never pronounced the "gh," so it never really made that much of a difference to me.

And, for what it's worth, I doubt that actual pirates were overly fond of either of the options.

And as it is coming up soon the 'International Talk Like a Pirate Day' sites have some good guides:

By the way its September the 19th this year.

[edit: It appaers that Yarrr is also an acceptable variation of Arrr - but Arrrgh....... get out of town]

Pirates come from all sorts of different countries.
Look at the differences between the King's English and American English.
Hell, even within a a single country a lot of differences can be found.
Ever heard of a southern drawl?
"Watch ya'll doin'?"
Why not different dialects or pronounciations for pirates?

Personally, I'm all for the silent "gh." Less fighting that way.

Emps -- great links. And I forgot about the "yarr" variation. That to me, is perfectly acceptable, and would go along with warjournal's dialect argument.

"Arrgh," however, still sounds to me like a pain response. Or an expression of annoyance. Or something a monster says. But not a pirate!

As for the silent "gh," the people around here aren't spelling it, they're saying it. They're adding the G sound. In fact, someone just did it again! It's bugging the hell out of me! Arrgh!

i guess if you asked a pirate if he wanted a glass of grog he'd answer .. "oooh aaarrr" ... but if you stuck him with a sword he's probably say "AAAARRRRGHHHH!!" ....

It's supposed to be "West Country" talk - Devon, Cornwall etc. which is (portsmouth for example) where a vast number of seamen (and hence pirates) came from, and it was popularised as "pirate talk" by Charles Laughton in his version of Long John Silver. However, just as many privateers on the British and French coats were, in fact, the lawless Manxmen ... who talked a totally different way, more a cross between Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow with a lot of duty-free rum sloshed in for good measure, and who also had a real language all their own which was akin to Gaelic, Celtic, Breton and Basque.

Well trib states it clearly, which almost takes all teh fun out of the discussion

All I can add is that Arrrgh is possibly an Americanism and hence is clearly inferior to to Arrr being the original Pirate term.

As to weather it's Queens English or Kings english, well at the moment it's definitely the Queens, but back in the days it was quite definitely the Kings.

Arrr Matey.

Arrr! = Happy/angry/excited pirate.

Speaking of which, I just saw the movie last night and must firmly recommend it. Johnny Depp as the slightly-insane Captain Jack Sparrow; the special effects and gruesome humor on the zombie pirates; the swordfights and nautical duesl; excellent stuff.

Haunted Mansion looks funny at any rate.
