OK, this is the second time this has come up at work and I can't believe it's even an argument. (More accurately, I can't believe I'm the only one on my side on this.) |

Its Arr (with as many 'r's as the situation requires) - plain and simple, no messing around, no arguements, end of story. |

You know, I must admit that I never really thought all that much about this, but hearing your argument I guess I would have to agree with you. Especially if the "gh" in "Aaarrgh" is pronounced. Honestly, I've never pronounced the "gh," so it never really made that much of a difference to me. |

And as it is coming up soon the 'International Talk Like a Pirate Day' sites have some good guides: |

Emps -- great links. And I forgot about the "yarr" variation. That to me, is perfectly acceptable, and would go along with warjournal's dialect argument. |

i guess if you asked a pirate if he wanted a glass of grog he'd answer .. "oooh aaarrr" ... but if you stuck him with a sword he's probably say "AAAARRRRGHHHH!!" .... |

I have to say I think Arrrr is more appropriate but while sitting here in my cube I can make it work with a very soft g in there. |

Ah, well, if the "gh" is pronounced, then I'd definitely have to vote against that. Although I think trib may have the best response in this thread so far. |

I thought 'Pirates of the Carribean' was a ride at Disney World. Or maybe I'm confused... |

Speaking of which, I just saw the movie last night and must firmly recommend it. Johnny Depp as the slightly-insane Captain Jack Sparrow; the special effects and gruesome humor on the zombie pirates; the swordfights and nautical duesl; excellent stuff. |

it is suho, you're not confused. its just also a new feature film, along with a variety of other comic heroes and novelizations this summer as we've apparently come to the end of all fresh ideas |

I too, have seen the movie and highly recommend it. Did anyone else see the preview for Haunted Mansion by chance? Is Disney making a movie for all of their interesting theme rides? |

Speaking of Disney rides... Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. Free, not too long, good read. One of those "believable future" doohickeys. |

The only time a pirate would say Aaaarg! is if he put a cutlass through his foot. Then it would be Aaargh! *thud* Aaaargh! *thud* AAAAAARGH! *thud* as he hopped around on one foot. |

Fig: Ah, thank you for the information. There's a slight lag in the time it takes movies to reach Korean theatres, unless they're really big ones (like Star Wars or LOTR). |

I haven't bothered to read what anyone said here, but I went and saw PotC opening night and loved it. I then went and saw it Saturday and Sunday with two separate groups of friends. I think it's the movie of the summer. Nothing I've seen yet, nor anything I expect in the near future, is better than it. |

yannah - as much as i've loved babylon5 - that whole discussion must be taken as "tongue-in-cheek". Lord of the Rings was originally published in 1955.. whereas babylon5 is only a few years old.. |
