Does anyone else here use Outlook Express as their e-mail client? If so, do you use any filters? Because I do, and it's almost as if they're non-exsistant... I get so many e-mails about being in debt and needing Viagra that I'm ready to snap.

Perhaps it's time for a new mail client?

Yep, I do, with the same results as you as well. I am actually in the process of selecting another mail client as we speak

How do you have your filters setup?

well, I use a transparent pop proxy for 'intelligent' mail filtering... it's called K9,
and I've been pretty happy with it so far.

This, the spam filtering my email provider does and my own set of regexps based rules... havnet' seen a spam mail (nor a false positive) landing in my desktop inbox for weeks. (now, I see them in the webmail account all the time... especilaly since the email provider only adds '[SPAM]' to the subject ;-)

Try using Eudora in sponsored (for free). It got a decent message filter.

However you have to add a rule for every new spam.

I tried K9... Didn't like it. I don't like programs that I have to keep running in the background, nor did I like how it works with Outlook...

I use outlook express and hate it too. OSAF Chandler looks promising but its no where near functional yet. Anyone here play with Pegasus Mail?

I actually use OUTLOOK, not only does it have better e-mail rules, but if used correctly, can keep your life well organised.

I have also used a program called MAILWASHER , this allows you to check your e-mail on the server before it downloads to your clients, its very intelligent and uses a SPAM database that is updated daily to help automatically filter out the crap. it also prevent viruses reaching your computer. Definately worth anyones time checkign it out.

i would suggest using mozilla mail, there is also a stand alone application, called mozilla thunderbird, where you just can get the standalone e mail program. it has a great spam filter too, btw....oh and something different: believe me, the best anti virus in the world is called "don't use outlook". since it is the most common one, many e mail viruses are programmed for outlook.

interesting.

I no longer use Outlook Express, but when I did, the message rules worked quite well.
All you have to do is keep adding words to a single rule as they come up.

Worked like a charm for me, and after the first hadful of times adding words to the list, it was very rare that I'd have to go back in and add more.

I will agree with Mas though - Mozilla's mail client is much better at catching junkmail and spam all on its own =)

I have to hold my hands up, after reading the replies above I dbl checked my mail rules and found that (somehow?) my collection of words to block had almost vanished!! (Only 8 left I think it was). Of course there are obvious ones to reblock straight away (viagra, debt ) heh, So I will have to educate outlook again.
(I really can't figure how the block list was changed)?

Viruses can do it...some of them, if they do manage to get through to your inbox, reduce your list of blocked words in order ot let more of the emails containing the virus through.

Cheers Skaarjj, I'm having fun here trying to remember all my key "ban" words, to include in the list, and then save it as a .txt file as backup

It's almost as if my message rules don't exsist. The Viagra and debt mails just keep on coming...
