It's about damned time. Zeldman has been advertising that one for the past couple weeks.
I thought he was trying to pull a twitch.

Slime: Thanks
I don't know if I preferred the previous design - it was bold (if slightly oppresive) and you knew you were on ALA - this feels a bit like a lot of other sites (Is there a law that table-free designs need to be done in white or pale pastel colours?).
[edit: And nice to see RSS feeds too:

I thought it was just me...who noticed this. Have they become trendwhores?.... =)
Proof again tho' that 'content is king'....

The new hot-topics list is ok...
The missing (or hidden ) search function is erhm missing.
It looks a bit crowded while there is plenty of space to the sides at 1024*768. The content section has an fixed size and is not very liquid. The content however looks good but the design is a bit yucky...

Oh, man... is this it?
I have to agree that the old design was better. This one just feels... dead.
Great articles though (as always).

re: the design
Zeldman has, over the past 6 years, drifted from solid, bold colours, to solid, pastel colours. It's a standard migration when a "graphic artist" becomes a "graphic designer."
It's tough to respect the man's artistic inclinations when he keeps churning out stuff like that. No one would question his commitment to the quest of seperating style from content, or his uncanny ability to make usable websites...but you're right: must they all look like my grandmother's living room?

Great articles (as usual), but as everyone has pointed out the design isn't as good as one could have expected. It is good, but could have been better...

What the hell is with the online dating service plugs... Says a lot for someone who avidly supports free and inderpendant content.
But I like this design better. Call me old fashioned, but I actually prefer fixed with paragraphs of text. *shrug* -- I guess the novelty of liquid page layouts wore thin for him too.

And even zeldman.com now only offers one pastel-colored theme. Sucks, cuz I quite liked the orange and red one...

Sorry to drag this back up again... but has anyone been having problems scrolling the ALA site in Firebird 0.7?
Clicking the mousewheel, and then moving the cursor above or below the arrow to scroll works fine. Actually rolling the mousewheel, however, produces no effect. And this is the only site I've encountered this on...

Hmmm. Apparently, my SmoothWheel extension is what's causing the problem. When I disable it, I'm able to scroll ALA. When I enable it, I can't.
That's funny. ALA is incompatible with a Firebird extension
[EDIT: Well, guess I'm not the only one. Someone posted a note about it on the extension feedback page, and the developer is looking into it. It's interesting how I've never realized how dependent I am on the mousewheel, until something like this happens...]

ozphactor: I've read somewhere, certainly here, that the smoothWheel problem was due to a certain doctype, or something like that

Unlikely... ALA is using an ordinary XHTML 1.0 Transitional doctype, and god knows I've seen those before.
