A friend is looking to buying one of those but knows nothing about them. I know what he 'wants'... so I'll lay it out best I can and if you can point me to a few sites that put out credible reviews, great, but I'm more interested in your experience.

Racing games, specifically NASCAR stuff will be the main focus... off-road games too...but NASCAR will rule. He and his wife are imo a tad over the top when it comes to NASCAR, right down to the special edition of the Dale Earnhart commerative Monte Carlo... I'm talking the REAL vehicle here (only 150 made.) They have enough Earnhart memorabilia to open a 'store'... I'm serious. Oh and did I mention the tatoo's. Get the idea? Big time over the top fans.

"Controllers' I think will be the big issue here. He really wants a 'wheel' and 'pedals.' The problem is the man has HUGE hands and equally HUGE feet.

I haven't done a google yet because I wouldn't know what to believe, so thought I'd ask here first as I know that a few of you have playstations of the Xbox... or both.
Short of an actual 'simulator'.... money is not a big issue.

thanx

I would say PS2 it got stearing whell and pedals, plus new grand turismo online and basicly whole lot of other good games....X box lacks games there are very little good games, but then again its up to him.

I'd say the PS2, although I'm pretty sure you can get the NASCAR games on X-box and steering wheel for it, there's not many wheels to choose from and there are plenty more models for the PS2 and that definately has the NASCAR series.

If money's not a problem why not build them a gaming PC, there are tons of high quality PC wheels loads of racing games, including lots of nascar ones. If they don't have the budget for a PC for their needs I'd say a PS2 too.

I used to have a PS2, I sold it and now have a Gamecube. I'm more a "fun" gamer, I like my Mario, F-Zero and Resident Evil rather than Simulation-type games. Apart from Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, that's great.

Also, check out www.easports.com for NASCAR games, I think they do the best ones. It might help you choose which platform to go for.

That'll hopefully help too.

I'd say XBOX, 'coz XBOX = ethernet connexion + hdd ... thus you can play some divX, run some emulators and so much more.

Thanx.. ppl.
It would seem I know absolutely nothing about either... I thought you hooked up both to your tv and that was it... but from the links offered I see there's online head to head racing available but they really don't explain exactly how it works. So just how does it work if you're not using a 'puter? Or does it run a hi-speed connection directly to the box itself and it runs thru the tv?

I don't think a gaming pc will work in this situation.

Sorry for the ignorance... but when you don't know... you don't know. =)

The PS2 has a plug-in aDSL modem with on-screen setup for Dial Up Networking to connect to your current ISP instead of your computer or an ethernet adapter which hooks up to any home network.

Nice!

Although the xBox does pretty much the same thing

Here's what I've been told, I don't know about specific games/genre's but I got this based on input from people who review games/gamesystems for a living.

GameCube is a heck of a deal for a new system. Great games great price.

XBox - slightly better system but doesn't have the same base of games as the Playstation. They did do the networking a bit better if you like online gameplay. One set fee covers any games you want to play as opposed to the Playstation which tends to require a seperate fee for any particular game.

PlayStation. Great system don't get me wrong and it's going to have the best game and accessory support (accessories like game controllers will generally be made for both systems)

Here's what I'd do. Do a little search on the best games your friend wants to play. Then find which systems the games can play on. If it's both the Xbox and the PS you may want to go with the X-box.

my $.02 but with lots of input from people who know this thing intimately.

bitdamaged Gave some good insights.

The xBox is sold at the price of the PS2 which is 2-3yo and thus it's normal that the PS2 have more games but it also have a shorter lifetime since the PS3 is expected around 2005.

[If someone ask you, I've never told you that]
The ethernet connexion and the hdd of the xBox are a HUGE plus. It's possible to access the xBox hdd from your PC and transfer some datas at will. You can replace the hdd by a bigger one ( a simple IDE hdd ) if necessary. There's some players for many formats of medias ( divX & co, mp3 ... ) plus some emulators so it's not a simple and single console that you have but half a dozen plus hundreds of more or less oldschool games. You can store and run an api or a game on the hdd, or dump some datas on the hdd.
[/If someone ask you, I've never told you that]

As to me, if I were to buy a console and had no problem of money, I'd go for a GameCube ( for the reasons given bitdamaged ) AND an xBox.

I have a PS2 (and used to have a GameCube). I think the game cube for the money and the way games are coming out for it, you can't beat it.
The graphics are great on it. I want to get another just so I can get Metroidprime again.

but, Bit gave some great points and I think his solution deems the best so far.

I don't want to get stereotypical and say "NASCAR == non-geek," but it doesn't sound like they'd be interested in setting up a gaming rig, or modding an Xbox, or anything. Thus, don't count the Xbox's "non-standard" applications in your decision. PS2 vs. Xbox is a toss-up -- if they really want to play against other people, tell 'em Xbox, but I'd go PS2. No fuss, no muss.

Let's put it this way. A while back (all is relative) I helped them set up their 'puter and walked them thru a lot of the basics..including basic maintenace..scandisk..defrag bla bla bla... and so when I was at their home this past weekend I was wondering just how long ago it was we set up this 'puter. Neither could really remember... then I went in to do a defrag (win98) the first thing I see is something like; 'Scandisk has not been run in the past 1003 days. One thousand and three! 'Windows cannot determine the last time defrag was run.' I lmao. That would be about the time I set it up.

So yes.... 'non-geek' it is. <lol>

IMO the gamecube is a great system, I've had a PS2 and my gamecube's way more fun than that ever was, but for their needs (NASCAR) it's gotta be a PS2 or an Xbox.

What about taking them to a computer game store and showing them what games there are, then they can see what system has the most games they'd like and they could get that one. I'm sure they'd be able to play-test each console at the store too so they can choose something they like personally.
