Was listening to a conversation one of our female anchors and our female weatherperson was having before a show the other day and I learned an interesting bit of information from them: Women don't like to be called "cute."

This was strange to me, since I really go for "cute."

They were saying that a woman would much rather be called "pretty." I could see their point if inflection were discussed as any part of it, as in someone saying, "Well, she's cute ... (implied 'but') ..." However, they were regarding the simple use of the word "cute" as somehow insulting.

Is this true, ladies? You don't like the word "cute"?

cute is bad!!

babies are cute...puppies are cute.... women are stunning, beautiful, exquisit, ravishing, pretty, lovely (i think you get the picture) but not cute.

it's just always seemed to me that the person saying 'cute' ... just has nothing else nice to say about you. like...if you were talkin to a woman with a face like a smashed crab, then to be nice... you'd say she's cute....

that probably makes no sense, and i'm not very good with explaining things... but cute is bad

Cute is t3h 3v1l for a lady! ¬¬

As already said, cute is more like objects, animals and little humans rather than for ladies. Ladies are elegant, smart, intuitive, sexy (in a good way, dont relate it to 'hot chick', ugh), beautiful, and obviously, wonderful

And when a woman uses cute for describing someone...s/he is usually a silly person

I always thought 'cute' was a good word.

Well, I'll have to refine the words I use to describe women. Argh.

From my point of view this is what I think of when these words are said (more or less, most of these except for the first and last are all googled and I found the one that fit best).

Stunning:click
Beautiful: click
Exquisit:click
Ravishing:click
Pretty:click
Lovely:click
Cute:click (nudity)

Who would agree?

I was always under the impression that, in this sort of situation, you would talk about how wonderful her personality is.

At this point in time, this is the first thing I think of when I hear "cute."

(Note: the above link is possibly in poor taste, but definitely hysterical--but only if you're familiar with Weebl and Bob. My wife does not understand why I find this amusing, so maybe it's a guy thing.)

Japanese men seem to be fine with this sort of thing, though. I'll have to second everything the ladies above have said about "cute". Women, especially women in relationships, have an amazingly hard time getting compliments in the first place. To have a rare compliment is a great thing, and to have the compliment be "cute" really spoils it.
If you're going to take a moment to give a woman a compliment, make it something she'll remember fondly. It probably has to last a while.

I heard something the other day that sums it up perfectly:

quote:
A woman has to be reminded occasionally that she is both desireable and beautiful, otherwise she ceases to be either.

"Cute". Bleh. Please.

There was a report on BBC News 24 the other night about hentai and the strongest tentacle porn, rape, etc. comics are available from the same shops as the rest - different strokes for different folks

Last I checked, no.

And as for the hentai being sold right alongside "normal" manga, I suppose Korea's not all that much different in that respect. In Korean video shops, the porn videos are right out in the front in full view of everyone, including the little kids who come in. I always found that kind of odd. I'm pretty sure hentai is a purely Japanese phenomenon, though (then again, I'm not really into Korean comics, so I wouldn't know for sure).

I've found that many women don't like the "cute" word either, and I must say, I think it's insane.

Most of my female friends are quite open about saying some guy is ugly, even to their face, and then they complain about the nice compliments they get. I'm starting to think this is because us guys don't pay women enough negative compliments. So, if we just start calling all women ugly for a year or two, they'll be great full for anything that can be passed off for a compliment. =)

Heh, just kidding, you're all beautiful.

suho: Definitions are irrelevant if they are used in a discussion with an irrational thinker. Most people are irrational thinkers... so as a generalization, you are correct. An intelligent person would choose words applicable to specific situational contexts. For instance, a suburban white male shouldn't go to Philly wearing a reversed red NY baseball cap with a bandana, walk up to a downtown Phillian black man who's strutting, and say, "Are ya down wit me, nigga?" In fact, suburban white kids dressing like that shouldn't go to any place that's dangerous and where they'd be perceived as contradictory to the cultural status quo. ;p

Suburban white kids dressing like that should just be shot on sight.

Back to the issue at hand, though. What I was trying to say with my rather dramatic "Dictionary definitions mean nothing" bit was the generally accepted meaning of words changes over time. Take "nice," for example. Originally, this word meant "foolish, stupid", then it took on a popular meaning, and these days it is so hackneyed that it is beginning to take on a negative meaning again (thanks in part to the efforts of the famed linguist George Carlin). Other negative words have followed a similar pattern ("bad" and "fat ==> phat" for example).

"Cute" has always had a positive connotation--perhaps it is now going the way of "nice."

There is also, as you mentioned, the problem of context (which includes the elements of speaker, listener, environment, etc.). Words mean different things to different people, even simple words like "table" (if I asked you all to draw me a table, I'd likely get quite a variety of different tables). When you're dealing with such subjective words as "cute," it's no wonder there is confusion.

In defense of guys who use the word "cute" to describe women, I will say that, when I was in university, we understood "cute" to have two meanings:

  1. "Damn she's cute!" (generally accompanied by a sharp intake of breath and an almost pained expression)
  2. "Eh, she's cute." (generally accompanied by a shrug and/or disinterested look)

As you can see, the two meanings are vastly different. The first definition is an extreme compliment, while the second is a kissing cousin to "nice". The problem is that most men, at least those who dislike getting maced or kicked in the nuts, will generally refrain from the exaggerated expressions of approval often accompanying the first meaning. Thus, women only ever get the second meaning, and therein lies the misunderstanding.

Why don't the women just come to the realization that "cute" means "girl I want to date, enter a committed relationship with, sleep with, marry, have kids with, buy a giant house for, and love for the rest of my days?" Because that's what it means... at least as much as "beautiful" and the rest of them mean... which isn't necessarily much.

I don't understand why would women dislike the word 'cute' because of its connotations and prefer being called 'pretty'. When I say 'cute' to a girl, I am not thinking about a baby nor about an animal, I am thinking about a girl. It is a feeling that comes from the heart to me, I would never say to an ugly girl that she's cute (it is a question of honesty). If I qualify a baby or a cat to be 'cute', it doesn't mean that I qualify it in the same way I qualify women. So women, please stop being over-concerned with your image and simply accept it as it is

I would tend to agree with PT otherwise :

Compliments, by nature, are formal (as in "adhering to a form," not as in "opposite of casual") expressions, and as such they are naturally going to be a bit trite. And when they're not trite (as Wes humorously illustrated), they tend to be ridiculous.

In other words, if we give compliments that no one else gives, we are either going to be considered cheesy or psychotic. And on the rare occasion that an over-the-top compliment works, it is most likely because the girl already wants to get in your pants. At least this has been my experience.

What I'm trying to say is, if you get stuck on "friend level" with a girl, it's most definitely not because you called her cute. She most likely never had any intention of engaging in the exchange of bodily fluids in the first place.

No, cute=puppy; dawg=ugly. Get it straight!

The term "cute" is an offhand remark, a safe remark, an easy thing to say. If it's all I'm gonna get out of someone, I'll take it. It's not like someone's trashing you by calling you "cute".

However - if you're looking to get my attention, impress me, really compliment me, you'll take the time to think up something better than "cute".

It's not that you have to drop the word from your vocabulary, just understand that if you really want to tell a woman she looks good and have her really appreciate it, you'll use a different word.

There's a time and a place for everything...

i wouldn't have thought that precious could be a compliment (or a compliment that i'd like)...and it's not a word i would use to describe myself... but it was still sweet and since it was new to me... he'll stand out, where as, he wouldn't have if he'd had said i was cute.

The first thing I think of when I hear the word "precious" is Gollum.
The next thing is my brother's evil cat, who is so named, but definitely not

But that's the point, exactly!

So us guys have a few years before we get the paper bag then? How many years is it before a puppy is considered a dog?

LOL J/K I just couldn't pass that up.

On a serious note... I've never understood the not liking cute thing myself. I understand it isn't liked but actively disliked? Makes no sense to me. I adjust my phrasology accordingly. Actions are cute, girls are not.

Phrases in my house:
"Your so wierd."
"That was cute." (pick your favorite tone)
"STOP IT!!!"
"Hey! C'mere."
"YIPE!! No tickle!" (Yes the grammer is correct)

That's all I can thik of right now. I'm sure she'll add more... mebbe.

Let's see now... A puppy ages 18-20 human years in the first year of it's life, and 5-7 human years for every year thereafter. A puppy is considered a full grown dog at 3 years, real time.

Given the analogy, a woman should no longer be called "cute" once she reaches between 28-34 years of age. Those intervening 6 years are questionable, watch yourself!

And since when has there been more to life than sex?

In other news, "cute" would certainly not be the first word coming to mind if I were with a girl doggie style. Most likely the first word would be something like "Gnnaaahhhhaaaaaahhhhh!"

Just to be very tounge-in cheek:
Let's see now... I try to keep with logic here..

All puppies are cute, so cute is ok for both men and women up to a certain age, right?
A male reaching 18-20 according to this analogy is no longer cute but a dog.

Then, still keeping with the analogy, a woman reaching the age of 28-34 is no longer a dog, but rather what female puppies become when they grow up, right?

And in order to be a complete grownup female puppie, I guess they need those 10-16 years more than the males.
(funny, and I've always heard that girls grow up more quickly)

Hmmmmmm this thread has got a little confusing

I suspect while I might describe a woman as cute with my male friends I probably wouldn't say it to a woman's face (I suspect because we'd interpret it differently which is where [some of] the confusion seems to be sneaking in).

Not quite. The maturity age for dogs is the same for both male and female dogs... A dog is not considered full grown until 3 years. From 1-3 years, a dog can still be called a puppy, and therefore cute.

I'd watch who you pulled that b-word on! I imagine you might get a worse reaction to that than you would with cute. Your reasoning is correct, but there's a line there that probably shouldn't be crossed!

Ahh, I found out what "tentacle porn" is.. and frankly I am shocked at you Suho...

Also I thought that to be called 'dawg' or 'dog' meant that you had passed levels and tests of fidelity under duress ... and hence is a compliment and something to be proud of...

Perhaps women don't like 'cute because it has prepubescent tendencies hidden amonst it's possible interpretations. ? and the word 'dawg' has worn out bitch written all over it. Maybe they just want to be considered ripe and in their perfect prime constantly ... and any language however innocent and delivered in sincerity must be modified to reflect this obsession. ? i mean desire. I mean in this mean world we live in.. if anyone says somethng nice to you, and it's meant in a nice way.. then be happy. ... and don't complain because you are under some delusion of being somekind of God's gift to whoever.

...and old dogs too are called 'cute' ... see dog site: http://members.tripod.com/~stinke/dogs.html

Xpirex: Don't be shocked. If you'll reread the thread, you'll see that I wasn't the one that brought up tentacle porn. It just happened to come in at the end of a Weebl and Bob episode that I thought of because it prominently featured the word "cute." I've never actually seen tentacle porn, and I have no plans to start watching it.

Lacuna: Now, now, no need to get upset. I was just teasing.

And say hi to Tiger for me.

bodhi: No, of course I wouldn't make that sound. I believe that standard sound in that situation would be "huminahuminahumina."

And I definitely think we should drop the dog analogy. It has occurred to me that the term for female dog would generally be considered far less flattering than "cute"...

In retrospect, I think this thread should have been in Philosophy and Other Silliness. I don't think it's legal to have this much fun in the lobby.
