Was listening to a conversation one of our female anchors and our female weatherperson was having before a show the other day and I learned an interesting bit of information from them: Women don't like to be called "cute."
This was strange to me, since I really go for "cute."
They were saying that a woman would much rather be called "pretty." I could see their point if inflection were discussed as any part of it, as in someone saying, "Well, she's cute ... (implied 'but') ..." However, they were regarding the simple use of the word "cute" as somehow insulting.
Is this true, ladies? You don't like the word "cute"?

cute is bad!!
babies are cute...puppies are cute.... women are stunning, beautiful, exquisit, ravishing, pretty, lovely (i think you get the picture) but not cute.
it's just always seemed to me that the person saying 'cute' ... just has nothing else nice to say about you. like...if you were talkin to a woman with a face like a smashed crab, then to be nice... you'd say she's cute....
that probably makes no sense, and i'm not very good with explaining things... but cute is bad

Cute is t3h 3v1l for a lady! ¬¬
As already said, cute is more like objects, animals and little humans rather than for ladies. Ladies are elegant, smart, intuitive, sexy (in a good way, dont relate it to 'hot chick', ugh), beautiful, and obviously, wonderful
And when a woman uses cute for describing someone...s/he is usually a silly person

Cute for a woman is far different than cute for a child. Don't get so hung up on the word - focus on what is actually meant by it...

I always thought 'cute' was a good word.
Well, I'll have to refine the words I use to describe women. Argh.
------------------------
quote: women are stunning, beautiful, exquisit, ravishing, pretty, lovely (i think you get the picture) but not cute.
From my point of view this is what I think of when these words are said (more or less, most of these except for the first and last are all googled and I found the one that fit best).
Stunning:click
Beautiful: click
Exquisit:click
Ravishing:click
Pretty:click
Lovely:click
Cute:click (nudity)
Who would agree?

I was always under the impression that, in this sort of situation, you would talk about how wonderful her personality is.
At this point in time, this is the first thing I think of when I hear "cute."
(Note: the above link is possibly in poor taste, but definitely hysterical--but only if you're familiar with Weebl and Bob. My wife does not understand why I find this amusing, so maybe it's a guy thing.)

Japanese men seem to be fine with this sort of thing, though. My wife and I were on a plane once (flying from somewhere to somewhere else, can't remember where, though), and there was a Japanese guy across the aisle from me reading some very graphic hentai. He had it right out in the open, and was just sitting there reading it like you might flip through The New Yorker. It was bizarre.
And I would say that Weebl and Bob is definitely not an acquired taste--apparently you either love it or you don't. I happen to love it.

I'll have to second everything the ladies above have said about "cute". Women, especially women in relationships, have an amazingly hard time getting compliments in the first place. To have a rare compliment is a great thing, and to have the compliment be "cute" really spoils it.
If you're going to take a moment to give a woman a compliment, make it something she'll remember fondly. It probably has to last a while.
I heard something the other day that sums it up perfectly:
quote: A woman has to be reminded occasionally that she is both desireable and beautiful, otherwise she ceases to be either.
"Cute". Bleh. Please.

There was a report on BBC News 24 the other night about hentai and the strongest tentacle porn, rape, etc. comics are available from the same shops as the rest - different strokes for different folks
Then again now I think about it perhaps Suho had got at my mains electricity and was beaming it into my house!! Is there no end to this man's evil????

Last I checked, no.
And as for the hentai being sold right alongside "normal" manga, I suppose Korea's not all that much different in that respect. In Korean video shops, the porn videos are right out in the front in full view of everyone, including the little kids who come in. I always found that kind of odd. I'm pretty sure hentai is a purely Japanese phenomenon, though (then again, I'm not really into Korean comics, so I wouldn't know for sure).

I've found that many women don't like the "cute" word either, and I must say, I think it's insane.
Most of my female friends are quite open about saying some guy is ugly, even to their face, and then they complain about the nice compliments they get. I'm starting to think this is because us guys don't pay women enough negative compliments. So, if we just start calling all women ugly for a year or two, they'll be great full for anything that can be passed off for a compliment. =)
Heh, just kidding, you're all beautiful.

suho: Definitions are irrelevant if they are used in a discussion with an irrational thinker. Most people are irrational thinkers... so as a generalization, you are correct. An intelligent person would choose words applicable to specific situational contexts. For instance, a suburban white male shouldn't go to Philly wearing a reversed red NY baseball cap with a bandana, walk up to a downtown Phillian black man who's strutting, and say, "Are ya down wit me, nigga?" In fact, suburban white kids dressing like that shouldn't go to any place that's dangerous and where they'd be perceived as contradictory to the cultural status quo. ;p

Suburban white kids dressing like that should just be shot on sight.
Back to the issue at hand, though. What I was trying to say with my rather dramatic "Dictionary definitions mean nothing" bit was the generally accepted meaning of words changes over time. Take "nice," for example. Originally, this word meant "foolish, stupid", then it took on a popular meaning, and these days it is so hackneyed that it is beginning to take on a negative meaning again (thanks in part to the efforts of the famed linguist George Carlin). Other negative words have followed a similar pattern ("bad" and "fat ==> phat" for example).
"Cute" has always had a positive connotation--perhaps it is now going the way of "nice."
There is also, as you mentioned, the problem of context (which includes the elements of speaker, listener, environment, etc.). Words mean different things to different people, even simple words like "table" (if I asked you all to draw me a table, I'd likely get quite a variety of different tables). When you're dealing with such subjective words as "cute," it's no wonder there is confusion.
In defense of guys who use the word "cute" to describe women, I will say that, when I was in university, we understood "cute" to have two meanings:
- "Damn she's cute!" (generally accompanied by a sharp intake of breath and an almost pained expression)
- "Eh, she's cute." (generally accompanied by a shrug and/or disinterested look)
As you can see, the two meanings are vastly different. The first definition is an extreme compliment, while the second is a kissing cousin to "nice". The problem is that most men, at least those who dislike getting maced or kicked in the nuts, will generally refrain from the exaggerated expressions of approval often accompanying the first meaning. Thus, women only ever get the second meaning, and therein lies the misunderstanding.

It sounds like all the women hate "cute" because they think it doesn't mean "desirable." Meanwhile, all the men use the word to mean "desirable."
Why don't the women just come to the realization that "cute" means "girl I want to date, enter a committed relationship with, sleep with, marry, have kids with, buy a giant house for, and love for the rest of my days?" Because that's what it means... at least as much as "beautiful" and the rest of them mean... which isn't necessarily much.
When I say "cute," that's what I mean. And since I'm just echoing every damn guy here, whose fault is it that "cute" sounds bad to women? I'm going to say it's their misunderstanding, not ours.

That's right, however, if one is to appease them he'd have to speak the language with which they're comfortable. This is another way women can "gain power" or control over a relationship. Beware.
