Hmm who is it in here that keep telling me "Google is your friend" ...?
Is there really no such thing as an utterly impartial search engine? ..and while I'm at it.. what does everyone think of the google toobar? If anythng?

Xpirex: I'm not sure what the issue is - the more expensive pay-per-click ads are across the top of the page and the less expensive ones are in a column down the side.

These ads aren't mixed in with your results and are obviously ads they are just appearing depending on the keywords in your search but they have been doing these contextual ads for ages now.

Have I missed something?

perhaps I got it wrong... when I search using google do the listings that appear get preference because of the amount they paid?.. or paid advertisers get preference over others in the results?.. I am happy to be put right here.
You have the Sponsored Links that appear on the right hand side.. the cheaper adds.. then you can get at the top of the main results list in the search if your willing to part with $10,000 for a short period.

Nope - Google would die rapidly if such a thing happened.

Lets take an example - a search for computers:
http://www.google.com/search?q=computers

Premium Sponsorship sites are listed across the top and the Ad words are listed down the side. Clearly the top ads are far more effective and prominent but you can't exactly mistake them for actual search results (they don't even work in the same way but act on specific keywords in your search so may only match one of the words which can lead to some odd contextual ads - searching for XHTML and tables brings up some XHTML stuff and some furniture stuff).

I would imagine it is run from a completely separate system so one can't influence the other.

^ Yep... I'm under the same impression as Emps.


As a side note -- I use the google toolbar both at home and work. I disable most of the options and buttons, but it saves me the constant trips to google.com just to do a quick search on something.

I use the google toolbar, mainly as a pop-up blocker, I quickly disabled the auto-fill thing as anything like that bugs the hell out of me the only other feature I use is the quick search thing. I'm safe in the knowledge there's a google search box always to hand.

The translate page into english could be useful too, but I haven't needed it yet.

1089 pop-ups blocked so far -hugs google toolbar-

I typed "Google Toolbar cons" in Google of course and came up with a page with that quote.. but now I can't find it...(perhaps they did not pay their subscription.. joke!)

You don't need a pop-up blocker if you use Firebird.

I reverted back to the dark side.

I am your father -blows into cupped hands to make heavy breathing type noises-

the pop up killer works real well, and also i use it for googling.

On Mozilla, not only does it block pop-ups, but I have google right in my standard addressbar- just press 'up' and 'enter'..
