All of Pugzly?s computers have been seized, and felony charges are most likely on their way. This is in response to a CIVIL dispute with a client (as mentioned here: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum5/HTML/000240.html)
Pugzly has temporarily lost ability to email or do much else. Will you help us with a legal defense fund? Please. I will set something up for donations. I would greatly appreciate your help. Emperor ? please cross post this message to Gurus Network . I don?t have the technical brilliance of Pugzly, so I have to research some of this in order to know how to set up a fund. This case may impact all who design and host websites. I will keep you posted. Please help my Pugzly. You can send email to Pugzly at my email address. You are also invited to send your thoughts on this travesty to sheriff@macomb-sheriff.com.
Thank you and God Bless You All.

I'd be interested in hearing more of the details of what's going on. You should consider setting up a web page which explains the situation and provides an easy way to donate, and see if you can possibly get it linked from zeldman.com or some other site which web designers who would want to support you would see. I'd be interested in donating something, but again I'd like to hear the details first.

Unless he's being mis-quoted by a clueless nitwit journalist, he comes off sounding like a clueless nitwit. The technologies Pat (minimized as a mere web "designer" by the local press) developed for that fine web site took it far beyond a virtual post office bulletin board. Is it possible Sheriff Hackel was the only one who didn't realize or appreciate that? Evidently, since his biggest whine seems to be the cost of reprinting letterhead. He'll have a new site up soon - yeah, right. The damage to the department will go far beyond having to repaint cars and reprint business cards.

I must say the way this situation is being handled by the sheriff's office doesn't inspire much confidence in professional law enforcement department administrators, does it?

It would appear that the Peter Principle is obsolete - the bar has now been lowered to the Hackel Principle.

Sad. The man obviously didn't have a clue what he had. One of the finest, most innovative sites of its kind, and he's managed to piss it away.

I never saw the site you made so I don't know what exactly was lost. But their "new" site makes me sick on so many levels. Have you contacted Bill O'Reilly? He seems to know how to get stuff done.

Edit: Along those lines, as the people who actually know what goes on behind such things, and I refer mainly to the others here who actually do understand the business and technologies (not me), what can be done to actually inform the public as to the true nature of projects like this? Because it is possible for just about anyone to grab a copy of F***P**e a put up a website, no matter how incompotently done, I get the impression that people don't think it is all that much work. (This is evidenced by the statement on the new website: ". . .the new and improved website for the Macomb County Sheriff's Office. This site promises to be much more dashing than the old site!!)

I have often been blown away by the extensive back-end work that was done for that site, as well as the clean, strong front-end design.

The new "site" is a total joke and I can only assume it's not going to get much better...

This guy's attitude is completely unacceptable for someone in his position - completely childlish and altogether unprofessional.

Let me also reiterate though - please don't anyone succumb to the urge to send off emails or guestbook entries lashing out about this. Wait for Pugzly to make his intentions and desires clear before acting.

At least for the time being, you can take some comfort in the fact that the new site (macomb-sheriff.com)proves that you usually get what you pay for.

<sarcasm>
Of course we all know that there is nothing to building a site....you just take a Word document, add a few animated gifs, underline text that is not a hyperlink, pick any old pattern and tile it for a background. Now just click ' Export as HTML' and there you go....instant Web-site.
</sarcasm>

Of course, Karma being what it is, some folks get exactly the site they deserve.

It does seem very awful from what has been stated, but as everyone else I must stress prudence. Besides, without knowing anything more about the site, and with all due respect

Butcher reminds me that not everyone might know what's involved when donating via PayPal....

For the person who's never used it, here's the .5 description
1. Go to http://www.paypal.com/ and setup a new account.
2. Tie your account to one or more methods of funding (credit card, bank account, etc).
3. Choose the option to SEND MONEY, and insert the email address of the recipients PayPal account along with the amount you'd like to send.
4. Follow the prompt to send the money.

You get a detailed list of account activity, and the recipient gets a notification of the funds.

Why use PayPal?
1. It's secure
2. It's convenient
3. It's free (to send money - you pay a percentage to receive money)

I've used PayPal for several years for a lot of online transactions (mainly ebay stuff). I've also got clients who pay for hosting via PayPal, and it works really well.

For those who'd like to send checks/money orders, please contact my wife offline for information.

Again, the wife is keeping very detailed records of the donations. All unused amounts donated for the CRIMINAL trial will be returned (I think we'll take the unused amount, divide it into equal portions for each donator, and refund like that). We expect it to cost up to $10,000 for legal defense in this issue.

OK we are seeking testimonials to Pugzly's character to things out after the rather negative image potrayed so far in the media.

If you could keep it to a sentence or two and then send it to mobrul (or Q me with them and I'll pass them on). Include the name you' like to be known as (your online nickname is fine) and you are passing them on with the understanding that they may be circulated at some point (probably not them all but a representative sample).

Thanks in advance but don't feel like you have to.

Good bump but unneccesary

OK things we are now going full ahead with things and turning things up a notch:

The Justice 4 Pat Richard Campaign

Presented by People for the Ethical Treatment of Web Designers

Due to a bit of leaking things have had to be brought forward a bit so bear with us while we put the final polish on things (so no 'hey this is missing' as we probably already know and we are working on it ) but I didn't want everyone finding the link from another site.

The next phase is publicity - Skaarjj and PetSkull have volunteered to act as our 'street team' and they will be drawing up a list of good places to drop this link in. Some from the site team will contact the big names (Register, NTK, Zeldman, etc.) but we will be looking for members of web design forums to offer to post their (to avoid accusations of spamming) and then the 'street team' will pass the links around further. I suspect if we can hit the important blogs and news servcies that the news will spread rapidly and word of mouth will do the rest but it doesn't hurt to get a bit of planning done.

Is putting a link in your sig at different sites a bad idea?
Just to get the link on the net?

If needed i will explain this to people in dutch oriented countries, this might be a good idea for others who speak a non-english native language. Spread the word.

Good ideas - feel free to link in form your own site (I am) and as long as you aren't ramming it down people's throats then I can't see the harm in adding a link to the site from your sib (like you have above really).

And it would be handy if we had people availabel to cover things in different languages. We'll need to speak to mobrul but perhaps it might be handy to have some translations of the press release.

I'm not entirely sure if its been brought up yet, but has anyone contacted the local government yet? Macomb County has a different set up then my county government but it would be well worth drafting a form letter to the 26 commissioners.

I'd be very willing to draft a form letter and mailing it out to each office although I want to get approval from either Emp or Mrs. Pugzly. Of course I'd post my letter here for everyone to see before mailing it.

There are enough connections here that we could have this site translated into any number of different languages and get it out to the whole world.

Also, are we planning on having any kind of co-ordinated google bombing of this site to get it's pagerank up there so it shows up high in the results?

To show support for Pugzly, I'd like to add a new section to the website...a new section you all can help with.

Take a picture of the words "Justice 4 Pat". It can be anything. It can be a bunch of people holding a sign, somebody wearing a T-shirt, peeing the words in the snow, writing them on the back of a dirty truck...whatever you want.
(Well, I'd be happy to look at the blatant pornography, but don't count on it actually making it to the site...)

Be creative and spread the word. I'll accept pictures from anybody.

So, take this picture, and either send me a nice jpeg or a link. If you want credit, include your name and address (physical or email or both)

send them to mobrul@hotmail.com

That's it. Happy shooting!

I haven't been to the site in a few days -- Wow -- there has been a lot of activity! Here's a brief update: The Preliminary Exam was set for March 5, but has been adjourned until May 6 so that our attorney can gather information from the seized computers. We urgently need to come up with $5,000 by May 6, and probably up to $10,000 if this matter goes to trial. I am unabashedly soliciting your assistance. First and foremost, we need donations to the legal defense fund. Second, we need to get the word out which will ultimately help in getting donations. There are currently several ways this can be done: Posting to other websites and alerting media outlets. We welcome comments and suggestions as to how we can meet our common goals: Justice For Pat. To those of you responsible for the http://www.justice4pat.com website, we thank you for your phenomenal support. God Bless.
