All of Pugzly?s computers have been seized, and felony charges are most likely on their way. This is in response to a CIVIL dispute with a client (as mentioned here: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum5/HTML/000240.html)
Pugzly has temporarily lost ability to email or do much else. Will you help us with a legal defense fund? Please. I will set something up for donations. I would greatly appreciate your help. Emperor ? please cross post this message to Gurus Network . I don?t have the technical brilliance of Pugzly, so I have to research some of this in order to know how to set up a fund. This case may impact all who design and host websites. I will keep you posted. Please help my Pugzly. You can send email to Pugzly at my email address. You are also invited to send your thoughts on this travesty to sheriff@macomb-sheriff.com.
Thank you and God Bless You All.

Thanks, Dear.
This really sucks, and the above is from my wife. I'm staying low (offline) for a while.
Clients should note that sites are still online - only the office machines were taken.

I'd be interested in hearing more of the details of what's going on. You should consider setting up a web page which explains the situation and provides an easy way to donate, and see if you can possibly get it linked from zeldman.com or some other site which web designers who would want to support you would see. I'd be interested in donating something, but again I'd like to hear the details first.

But yes it is very serious and we do need to put the word out - however, we also need to be careful about the legal situation.

I would ask that people don't fire off angry emails as this is quite a nasty legal situation and we don't want to make things worse - we'll sort out the relevant information and pos. get a form letter together so we can do this in as effective manner as possible.

quote: Hackel said it?s important to stay on the Internet because a site allows the department to post things like sex offender lists and employment opportunities.
Unless he's being mis-quoted by a clueless nitwit journalist, he comes off sounding like a clueless nitwit. The technologies Pat (minimized as a mere web "designer" by the local press) developed for that fine web site took it far beyond a virtual post office bulletin board. Is it possible Sheriff Hackel was the only one who didn't realize or appreciate that? Evidently, since his biggest whine seems to be the cost of reprinting letterhead. He'll have a new site up soon - yeah, right. The damage to the department will go far beyond having to repaint cars and reprint business cards.
I must say the way this situation is being handled by the sheriff's office doesn't inspire much confidence in professional law enforcement department administrators, does it?
It would appear that the Peter Principle is obsolete - the bar has now been lowered to the Hackel Principle.
Sad. The man obviously didn't have a clue what he had. One of the finest, most innovative sites of its kind, and he's managed to piss it away.

I never saw the site you made so I don't know what exactly was lost. But their "new" site makes me sick on so many levels. Have you contacted Bill O'Reilly? He seems to know how to get stuff done.
Edit: Along those lines, as the people who actually know what goes on behind such things, and I refer mainly to the others here who actually do understand the business and technologies (not me), what can be done to actually inform the public as to the true nature of projects like this? Because it is possible for just about anyone to grab a copy of F***P**e a put up a website, no matter how incompotently done, I get the impression that people don't think it is all that much work. (This is evidenced by the statement on the new website: ". . .the new and improved website for the Macomb County Sheriff's Office. This site promises to be much more dashing than the old site!!)

He and the local media obviously have *no* idea what they had in that site, or in the free web-hosting.
I have often been blown away by the extensive back-end work that was done for that site, as well as the clean, strong front-end design.
The new "site" is a total joke and I can only assume it's not going to get much better...
This guy's attitude is completely unacceptable for someone in his position - completely childlish and altogether unprofessional.
Let me also reiterate though - please don't anyone succumb to the urge to send off emails or guestbook entries lashing out about this. Wait for Pugzly to make his intentions and desires clear before acting.

At least for the time being, you can take some comfort in the fact that the new site (macomb-sheriff.com)proves that you usually get what you pay for.
<sarcasm>
Of course we all know that there is nothing to building a site....you just take a Word document, add a few animated gifs, underline text that is not a hyperlink, pick any old pattern and tile it for a background. Now just click ' Export as HTML' and there you go....instant Web-site.
</sarcasm>
Of course, Karma being what it is, some folks get exactly the site they deserve.

I am a bit overwhelmed by all of this. From the information presented I can not get a clear picture of what is actually occurring at all. Is there anyone who is on the ground floor of this (i.e. Living near Pugzly) who can shed further light on what is going on?
It does seem very awful from what has been stated, but as everyone else I must stress prudence. This is not an issue which should be approached with cavalier, it must be carefully looked at from all angles, and the plan of attach must be formulated in such a way as those who act will be acting in unison toward a definite planned goal.

Emperor, I certainly did not mean you by my reference to the fabled character. I do apologize for any mix-up. I was referring to the Emperor of the fable and his chamberlains. You remember the story of The Emperor?s New Clothes are actually nothing at all, and his chamberlains don?t have the courage to tell him. They don?t tell him he?s naked, and so he proceeds to parade through the town. Remember? Maybe it was a bad analogy. Again, my apologies!
