Yep. At least, that's what I was told by one of my company's IS guys in a meeting today. I was asking what HTML editors (if any) we have in our software library because we're moving to XP soon and we can't install our own software.

I politely told him that there are other editors out there that are far better and would allow for more productivity.

His reply?

"Well if you really understood how to use Word you'd be more productive with it than with any of those other editors."

I would like to see you bring in Max's program... hehehehehe That would shut him up. Better than Office and it is free.

What a bunch of knuckleheads

He obviously just doesn't program. Since that's the case, tell him to let people who do work with actual code have their way.

Perhaps you should remind him that there is a healthy number of people who make their living fixing the mangled crap that others produce with Word and Frontpage, so that it is actually fit to be presented on the web.......

I'm all for Word/Frontpage because they mean job security for me!

Well if YOU really understood basic HTML you'd be more productive with a good editor than with anyversion of Word.

I'm not so sure it's even funny... It's just sad and scary and waaay too close for comfort to the situation I keep finding myself in with my managers...

Kind of reminds me of a discussion a couple of years back with a manager of mine that had taken upon himself to take onboard consultants to create our new site. When we asked him why he hadn't consulted us, he said:

"Well, for this we need real consultants and not any HTLM (sic!) coders."

(needless to say, we had to straighten out his mess afterwards anyway).

Q: No IT degree?
A: No IT decisions.

Not negotiable.

It only we could enforce that. It'd save bucket loads of money around the world... I still remember the horror stories of the regional accountants manager making IT decisions at an engineeing firm I used to work for a while back.

krets: That guy well deserved to receive a ball of paper in the head during the meeting. And it's almost sure he never heard about that thing called W3C or had a look at the HTML horrors generated by Word.

Well, scary but not surprising...
Unfortunatley also quite serious from many angles.

What I'd do is to create a very simple page in M$Word, just a two col table with links to the left and content to the right, set some headings and bg color and save as HTML.

Then do the exact same thing by hand.

Now print both sources...
Then you show him that together with a time/cost estimate to produce and maintain each of them.
Next bring up the accessability view, why it's important that the source can be interpreted by those tools.
Next bring up the SEO aspect, why the sources structure is important to get listed high in the search engines.

You have to explain this to them in their language so they understand the effects in a context that they can measure, (time/cost to produce/maintain, closing out potential customers, low SEO ranking, things that can effect a companys business), otherwise they can't relate to the problem.

Nip this in the bud, otherwise there will be h*ll to pay later (but you know that just as well as the rest of us)

Oh, he's not going to make me start using Word. Luckily I have a very cool boss (who also happens to be the CEO's daughter) and she gave me permission to use whatever software I need. I just have to tell the IS guys what I want so the company can get it for me.

This guy was just a wind bag who thought he knew everything about everything. Luckily he's not responsible for actually creating any web things. He just writes our company security policies and overlooks our exchange server.

However, this "He just writes our company security policies..." together with the above makes me shiver slightly
