Something has deleted me all my program files folder. This is quite bad. I can still browse because apparently firebird is still loaded on the memory. I am fucking scared there is a virus eating everything.

What I am smelling is a frikkin windows bug. Why? Well, happens to be taht when i opened Painter 8 (27 days left on trial version), a prompt saying "winodws is configuring painter 8" stuff happened (painter 8 opened correctly), and well, i tried to open winamp, then windows couldnt just find it. I checked and there Program files just had painter 8 folder (yeah, this means i wanst really specific on my first post, but think about it, i was pissing in my pants).

Operating system decay its called. Reload. And this time install a good AV package.

I have seen a folder deleted twice, both times by a virus, and it was specifically an AV directory.

My Ex swears her windows (95) did it of its own accord.
I am about 80% ready to believe her.

Do a search on google for AVG Antivirus the free version is great! I put this on all of the windows machines that those other people I come in contact with use. It is much easier to spend the 5 minutes to install anti-virus software than to have to spend the 30+ minutes to clean an infected computer.

AVG Free AntiVirus can be found at http://www.grisoft.com

I have had good experiences with this program. This software allows you to obtain virus definition updates without paying a subscription fee. And so far, I can't see that it's any worse than any of the other commercial AV programs out there. In fact, AVG has picked up viruses in emails that my Norton didn't notice... not sure if there was just a delay in getting that definition in the update or what - but it sure convinced me that AVG is worth some attention...

The free version is a single license product for personal use only. If you are using it in a commercial environment, look into their For Purchase product. It is also very good.

Thanks for the links guys. there does not seem to be any sort of virus, I am still smelling a windows glitch. Right now I have been reinstalling plenty of stuff. too bad I just lost all my current downloads on my p2p programs, my powerpro configuration and my logs on trillian/miranda :/

I was going to refomart around the next couple of months, so I dont worry as much as I thought i was going to.

I have a son. At the time he was 2 maybe 3 and he moved my program files folder. Use the FIND feature.

I was certainly something like that the first day, to be honest. Really paranoid. Then I rebooted, found out that I am capable of opening webpages with explorer (I always thought that ie rendering engine was on the executable or on the ie folder at least :P), so I downloaded a few restoring programs just to find that none of them were actually useful on their free version. Lacking the money, I started to resintall everything I have been capable of . A few stuff I have been unable, such as Plus!, compaq's intenet keyboard's support, office (i lost mah cd :S), and a few other things here and there. Damn, right now I dont have mspaint, which sucks if you ask me.

Something I found out -- if you accidentally install something to your program files directory, don't run its uninstaller. It might delete all the relevant files, then try to delete the directory they were in (thinking it would be something like "program files/application" instead of just "program files".)
