Well after I stupidly replaced my shell and got sucked into Aston ( www.finedesktop.com ) I decided that I needed it. So I'm trying to design a theme for it. (Theme designers get it for free.) And well after deciding to take a ray of light approach, I did some funky stuff and applied a bevel/emboss and... [edit for DL-44's sake.]
Ok yeah its uber trendy. What you think?

Not real sure what sort of feedback you're looking for here.
Personally... I think it's annoying and ugly.

Ugly? Maybe. Annoying? I didn't think so. Hey, at least I had the curtosy to post it under a link. I'm only 15 and not very imaginative.

uh.... "wow that looks sweet" cannot follow "I did some funky stuff and applied a bevel/emboss" in a sentence.

Period.

And I think michael said all that can be said about the image itself....

I don't know it's interesting but as a interface skin, it's a little harsh to look at for extend periods of time. An interface should be simple, functional, and usable for extend periods of time with out eye fatigue. The text is also getting lost in the visual effect. Type should remain readable, after all that's the point of text.

But that's just me as I dislike the whole skinning thing. My computer is just a tool, It just needs to work not look pretty.

Agreed. I realize the value of aesthetics, but not when it gets in the way of performance. Function over form for me. And as for the skin... uh, I think pretty much all that can be said, has been said

what is this about?

"More uber trendy junk"?

Why post.... "junk"

yours truly, confused.

no wait... my first reaction was, "thats hideous". It is a text effect though, So I realy would not expect much. It can be a good tool fo learning PS... but thats about all.

Its a WIP... who knows. :: shrug:: I can't quite figure out what to do for the background. Salvagable? Dunno.

[Edit: I disaprove of skinning too. Junk! But then of course this actually will be handy in one case. Unlike in Windows Media Player which just slows it down more than it already is. The shell actually takes 4 megs less memory than explorer.exe. Handy for Photoshop and only 128 megs of ram.]

[Other edit: Well then what can I do to salvage it besides junk it? And if I do have to junk it what should I do next time to make sure the error don't happen again?]

[Other other edit: The text was unreadable cuz I rescaled to 50 percent. In the full version its totally readable.]

If this is something you're designing for your own computer why should it even matter what all us yahoos think?

If you like it, go with it.

Part of the the harsh eye anoyence is caused by the depth of the crystal effect. Try a more shallow simple crystal. As someone commented before it needs to be simple and not painful to look at for long pierods of time. Avoid harsh contrasts, go for soft colors like light blue and white, or different shades of the same color. Use transparency to make effects more subtle. Remember you want the applications to stick out not the interface.

And I have all effects and bells and wistles turned off, and use clasic borring look in my pc. I'd like to have a super cool awesome gui to interact with, but supper pretty awesome effects = SYSTEM CRASH 99.9% of the time. You can't run Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and Premiere, and a few web-page windows at the same time and expect pretty too. (at least not yet)

So a less harsh background... Maybe kill off the black/grey trendy cropped at 45 deg. Angle box and add a white background or maybe a pale blue? (Like in the early windows versions 'cept lighter?)

Thanks for all yer help guys!
