I've been working on a project for my boss recently and just had a vicious blow struck. The systems this project is going to run on are still running IE 4.0.

Ouch. Mind you, I didn't find this out until I was almost completely done with the project and had used lots of CSS-2 and other spiffy things that absolutely will not work in IE 4.0.

So here're my questions:

Do external stylesheets work in IE 4.0 or does it all need to be internal?
What CSS will work and what won't? Anyone have a good resource on this?
Do you know anyone with a large sharp knife that I can ram into my skull?

Actually, it's not as bad as you would expect. IE4 was actually ahead of its time, when it came to CSS support. External stylesheets are certainly supported, and IE4 even understands the @import rule (although there is a way to make it not).

As for CSS layouts, could you show us the page you're working with? From my experience, IE4 botches floated layouts, because ot has an incorrect "float model." Absolute positioning works relatively well, and I'm not too sure about the rest.

Yes, I know what does and does not work.

I agree, it's not quite as bad as you might think. It was *far* better than NN4.x on CSS support.

Floats, as Oz said, will crumble into an incoherent mess, but a lot of "normal" visual styling will work out ok.

How (un)realistic is the idea of trying to convince your boss to upgrade?

twItch^: Thank you for the compatibility table.
Sash: In my ex-company, that was the commercial team who told the clients their site with lots of DHTML and complex style will work like a charm in 4th generation browsers. Damn, those guys didn't even know what a <table> is. The cherry on the cake was that we had one computer with IE3 and NN3 ( for the clients coming from the twilight zone ) but none with IE4
