Everyone loves caffeine; coffee, tea, soda. It's a ritual. I can't go to a restaurant without ordering hot, bubbly, coffee. Boiled coffee with cardamom is the best of the breed.
I recently discovered the greatest energy-kick this side of illegality. Anhydrous caffeine can be purchased through most chemical suppliers. You can eat it, smoke it in a vapor pipe, insufflate it. Although it looks slightly suspect. It actually gives you a speed-like high. Although too much is probably dangerous.
Other than that, anyone tried Mediterranean coffee? Above mentioned: the coffee beans are ground and boiled with cardamom until an ever-so-slightly viscous liquid remains, with thick foam on top. YUM.
I recently (4 months ago or so) went thru caffeine withdrawals. Rather unplesaant headaches for 8-10 days or so. Where as I used to suck up a minimum 2 pots a day I'm down to maybe 2 cups a day.
Not bad I figure because I quit smoking at the same time. I knew if I had any hope of quitting the nicotine the caffeine had to go too because those 2 go together like I don't know what. Give me a good coffee.... or a bad coffee for that matter and a pack or 2 or 3 or.... of strong cigarettes, NJ was a happy lad. A pot and a pack... aka a 'tow-boaters breakfast'. That animation of the Doc smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee... well that was me. (without the talent of course) =)
I'd tried stopping the nicotine many times before... chewed the gum... taken the pills... but this time it was straight up stop.
Like Blaise said... 'Not everyone loves caffeine' but I wasn't one of them. =)
Wow, I know what you mean; I tried quitting smoking once but coffee gives me the shakes, so relapsed into whispy-smokey-goodness. It's funny that I can remember when the taste of both repulsed me, but now they're orgasmically good. Oh, and who smokes menthols? Disgusting. I bummed one off a friend one time and it made me vomit! Blegh. Camel wides are a favorite.
Yeah I get horrible caffeine withdrawals. But then again, if you always have coffee, there's no need to stop.
That, and although lattes and mochas are tasty, they aren't fucking coffee. I can't stand people who say: "I love coffee" and drink fructose-laden shots of espresso and milk. It's not coffee! If you can't drink it black (or creamed) then you don't really like coffee - you like sugar.

Should you decide to stop smoking something about nicotine you should know... which I did not, until this time...and that is; nicotine gets in deep... like right into your bone marrow.
This means that after you've gone thru the initial 2 or 3 days of withdrawals.... (which really aren't that tough)....about 6 to 8 weeks later (maybe longer) you go thru a 2nd round of withdrawals as the nicotine works its way out of the marrow.
It's this 2nd round of withdrawals you have to be aware of because they come out of nowhere...at any time... for no apparent reason, like there's no apparent trigger..there's nobody around who's smoking.... no smell of coffee..nothing you'd normally associate with smoking but all of a sudden...the beckoning call of the nightmare known as Nicotine Nancy is right back in your face...and I'm sorry but Nancy is just one ugly fucking bitch.
But this 2nd round is quite different. The 'pangs' were/are very very short. Just that they come out of nowhere and this time I knew what to expect and found it wasn't too difficult to distract myself.
Clearly I was more than 'ready' to stop smoking but I'm not so sure how I would have done had I not stopped the coffee at the same time. Now... like I said, I can have a couple of cups without crawling back and sucking up to Nancy. =)
but the point of this thread was to say how nice coffee is. and be honnest going out with some friends and having a nice cup of cappucino (with or without cigarettes) is one of the nicest thing there are!
you smoke camels? you are hardcore, i'd quit for 6 months but am smoking again after i broke up with my gf,
blaise, i'm with you dont really like coffee, sometimes is okay but not everyday, dont drink cola either, herbal tea if i want a hot drink, other wise mineral water which is the best thing since, well forever
EVERYone smokes camels. Or parliaments. I worked in a gas station last year (almost as bad as the "food-service-industry") and subdivided everyone up by cigarette types.
Hipsters/Trendwhores/Art-kids smoke Camels or roll their own
Hippies/Thrifties smoke bidis, camel lights, american spirit (they give you organic lung cancer!), or roll their own
Scene kids smoke Djarum blacks (so it doesn't clash with their outfits), camels, or Parliaments (becausae nobody else will)
Old whorish women smoke virginia slims or winstons
old men smoke lucky strikes, pall mall unfitered, or something equally unfiltered
black people (unless they fit the first three groups) smoke mentols
cowboys and and nonsmokers smoke marlboro
whorish young women smoke marlboro lights
Hip/Art school kids smoke roll your own ('casue they cant afford tailors)
nasty old ladies smoke Horizon or Peter Jackson ( in a 40 pack)
asian students (the cool fashion ones) smoke marlboro lights,
hicks/rednecks smoke winfield blue's or dunhill red's,
abo's smoke anything they find on the side walk,
only people on drugs smoke mentols over here,
i personally love the smooth filtered taste of benson & hedges "fine" 4 mg's of smokey goodness
btw what is it with black's and menthols?
btw the camels we get over here are like 16 or 32mg unfiltered
My father is a heavy smoker and drinks tea constantly - and I mean constantly...
If he has to go without a smoke for some reason, he has no real problem with it. He'll crave a ciggie, yeah, but he'll make-do without.
His tea on the other hand, is a different drug entirely. If his cup remains empty for more than a couple of hours, he gets ratty, loses concentration, and starts shaking. He really cannot go without a hot cuppa' for any length of time.
I like my coffee - but I do try to stick with green tea.
I would hazard that the primary risks of using anhydrous caffeine would be high blood pressure and dehydration.
There's some interesting information on caffeine here, including this bit on overdosing:
quote:Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and can produce a variety of effects elsewhere in the body. The symptoms of a caffeine overdose ("caffeinism") will vary, according to individual differences and the amount consumed. Doses ranging from 250 to 750 mg (2 to 7 cups of coffee or tablets of NoDoz) can produce restlessness, diziness nausea, headache, tense muscles, sleep disturbances, and irregular heart beats. Doses of over 750 mg (7 cups of coffee) can produce all of the above as well as a reaction similar to an anxiety attack, including delirium, drowsiness, ringing ears, diarrhea, vomiting, light flashes, difficulty breathing, convulsions (extreme overdose). These amounts of caffeine may come from a single dose or from multiple doses at short intervals. Besides caffeine's effects, the essential oils of coffee may cause gastrointestinal irritation and diarrhea, and the high tannin content of tea can result in constipation.
Packed in smoking any cigarettes a long time back, you've got to be stupid to smoke them. Coffee, I have in moderation as a treat.
I am very aware of how the coffee producers can be ripped off by the multinationals so I always buy Freetrade or equivalent.
Nice to see you back "on board" White Hawk.
Whoa... I go through 7-10 espressos plus 2-3 regular (but strong) mugs o' coffee per day and I'm still alive and without severe side effects <twitch>
At times, esp cmbined with too little water and/or food during the day my fingers vibrate a bit, but 2 hours w/o coffee or a bite to eat normally cures that
On the other hand, a guy I know drank one espresso and ended up sitting on the floor sweating rivers and shaking... Somehow that indicates that it does take some time to build a tolerance
/D
<edit>Btw, when I smoked I handrolled my own, had a leather pouch with tobacco and plain papers, that's it, no filters or prerolled stuff. </edit> {cell 260}{Blog}

Funny that's the brand you request to distract the cashier as you blaze with a case of beer in each hand, sans payment of course. "I need a pack of Benson and Hedges Menthol ultra light 120's in a box " *poof* yer gone
I'm a reformed smoker (I don't drink or steal eaither ), quit the 1-2 packs a day over 10 years ago now, maybe 15, but coffee still has me pretty good. I'd like to quit but then, not really.
I have been off the caffine for the past month and a half and now I have gotten off the smokey-treats... somewhat. I am down to drinking rootbeer and I smoke lavendar in a corncob pipe. Caffine was wrecking my bladder and kidneys. I used to drink about 4 20oz Mt Dews in a day, and I used to smoke cigars. I have been feeling better after the withdrawls. I have not had the second rounder though.

My word, I must come across as a sanctimonious old fart at times, I'm not that bad really, am I?
Great link JK, see how purdy the marijuana induced web was
Do you chaps over the big pond call cigarettes fags, as we do here in old blighty? Packing them in must have added another ten years to the football career eh?
It seems a couple of other sites I looked at really differed in their definitions of "overdose". I'm sure that on a coffee day I must severely exceed the overdose according to most. I really should stick to the green tea.
I smoke ciggies, and I still enjoy them too much to want to quit. I may give up one day, but I know there's little point in trying while I haven't the will to even consider it. Funny thing is, like my father, I can go without for fairly long periods. I would stick to green tobacco if it were freely and legally available...
Thanks for the welcome, Tao. T'is weird and peculiar walking these halls again...
reading over this thread has me thinking... I drink coffee and tea alternating throught the day. I Start with coffee... maybe 2 - 3 cups from 8-10am, then get a glass-o-tea... lunch rolls around and that means water or more tea... then i get sleepy and repeat until the day is done.
But the good stuff is the chocolate covered expresso beans. nothing touches em as far as i am concerned. Yummah and Super Caffinated. Not even those caffeine packed penguin breath mints!

yep, I was right there with ya. Plus smokin about a pack a day. Until the other day. Was leaving lunch that I was having with my fiancee. Left the parking lot and she called me on her cell to ask something. All of a sudden I felt like fuckin shit! Got real hot and started sweating. My whole body started to "tingle" for lack of a better word.
Everything around me started moving WAY far away from me. Let me remind you that I am driving and on a pretty busy highway during lunch and I still on the phone with woman. Then I started to loose my vision out of the corners of my eyes. Needless to say I was FREAKIN! I told her that I felt like shit and I was going to pull over. Swung into a parking lot and woman came up beside me. She gets out of her car and says "Man you look like shit!".
So, I didn't want to but I went to the doctor. He didn't ask if I drink or had drank a lot of coffee he just said "Lay off of the caffeine!" He said that I was pretty much overdosed on it. That coupled with a bit of stress at work and trying to find a house to buy did it for me.
Now, I'm down to 2 cups (smaller cups) a day. After that it's water.

Steve: "using a popcorn popper!" One of my long time best friends has been doing this for years and I have to admit the process does make a damn fine....good good good cup of coffee and now that I've stopped smoking I might consider giving it a whirl. When I was smoking however I was interested only in getting my caffiene as quickly and as directly as nicotine. =)
cfb: I'm not trying to be nasty... crude.... harsh.... whatever when I say.... that when you say "i never got how people can smoke a pack a day, or more.".... then you as an individual.... have no concept or understanding of 'addiction' other than it's a word. On the plus side of 'no concept'... take those cigarettes that might be nearby....toss them in the garbage.... walk away while you still don't get it. Get it? At least give it a whirl.... and see how much you don't get it. =)
Hahaha no, i hear you nojive. Perhaps that is addiction - and yes, good experiment.
I guess what I mean is: if you wanted to stop, why not?
For example, I had/have a narcotics problem, but when i relapsed i just cut off my supply. so that's an addiction, but it seems easy enough to solve.
Like when I go camping with family I don't smoke. I just have to sit through withdrawal for a while.
that's what I mean, like: i don't understand the "compulsion" to get more immediatly. You want to repeat the experience, but you can always resist the urge to get in the car, drive to the store, get more. "That's what you suffer," I guess. That's your "punishment" for using "drugs," whatever they may be.

Consider yourself very fortunate.
If it's not too personal of a question may I ask what narcotics have troubled you in the past? Because categorizing 'addiction' and 'drugs' is a simple misconception that many of the general public have (not referring to you in specific) as there are many different levels of addiction and there are several kinds of drugs. An addiction to pain pills and an addiction to meth are far apart. Even so with any drug. If you've managed to successfully identify and solve a drug problem then you should feel very accomplished. I know hundreds of people that have had or still do have drug problems. And it's not an easy battle to win.
Moving on =)... I've always dug coffee. I take it like the wolf, lots of creme lots of sugar. As for cigarettes? Been smokin for about 2-3 years now, camel lights all the way. Unlike some other people around me I enjoy tasting my tobacco. If I feel the need to induldge myself with a minty fresh flavour, I'll just chew some gum. Coffee + Cigarettes = love in the mouth and one super stimulated mind. Nicotine and caffeine go hand in hand together as a creative force. Need proof? Watch the movie Coffee and Cigarettes .
My caffeine comes in sodas (Dr. Pepper!) and sweet tea. Sweet tea is so good. I don't know why you can't find it anywhere but southern US. I only drink coffee when it's cold outside. Not much then. I probably drink 3 maybe 4 cups a year.
The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made. --Groucho Marx
I drink water. That's around about it. Oh, and milk. I don't drink coke, I work in IT and I only ocassionally drink coffee. Tea turns my stomach unless it's green or peppermint. I don't smoke, consume alcohol. Mostly, I drink water. Mind you, I have to, because of the drugs I take, but that's a different matter. I may be addicted, but they're prescription.
The spider web experiment was awesome to see. Very interesting read.
Yeah i smoke 3/4 pack of cigs a day. Like someone said above, i think i still enjoy cigarettes and hang out with too many smokers to attempt quitting. My biggest vice is a cigarette with a beer or a cup of coffee.
Here's my take on cig brands:
Most student populous smoke camels/marlboros
Hippies smoke american spirits, camels, and parliaments
black dudes usually smoke newports
I used to swear by camels, but after getting multiple throat/tonsil sicknesses i switched to marlboro lights. They seem smoother. I feel like now i've switched to the worse of the two evils. Look at the names Philip Morris vs. R.J Reynolds.
Speaking of which smoking a cig with a cup of coffee right now.
