Yes... But quik looks cheezie as cheezie can be!

I think ua use the wind filter and red/yellow colors... some color dodge and ya have cheapo fire...

So... I think you should ask what kind of fire you want...

Animated?

or like fire painted on a car? (more cartoonie)

quick and easy cheepo fire?

real fire?

Red fire?

Blue fire?

I am just sayin... It could help if ya are a little more specific! What are ya wanting ta use it fer?

I definately want it to look good, like real fire. I also thought it would be cool to have maybe a chrome fire, but I don't know how to do it. Probably on a black background, to be used as a part of a picture where the fire is reflecting off of another object, to be named later.

As a side note, hwo would I create a metalic layout for text that's tinted more like gold?

If this is what you're looking for, I'll type up how I did it.

Oh yea, this is not really very quick at all.

I remember I picked this general method up from a tutorial a while ago. I can't remember the tutorial, but just wanted to let you know I'm not claiming this method as my own.

At the bottom of the layer, make some white circles/ovals on a black background.

Rotate the layer counterclockwise and use the wind filter about four times to get some spikes coming off the top of the shapes. Rotate it clockwise back into shape.

Give the layer a little gaussian blur. Then run a hue/sat with colorize checked to make the layer bright orange (100% saturation).

Duplicate this layer and run another hue/sat to make the duplicated layer red. Set the blending mode of this layer to color dodge.

Make a new layer and push cntrl-alt-shift-e to merge the layers together onto it.

Now use Image/Liquify. Set the brush to around 50-40 and drag upwards in a zizag fashion to make the flames look good. Make the brush small and harder to finish up.

You're done. It'll take practice to get it right.

well if my img link worked right, you can see my first ever attempt at creating fire in photoshop. It's not great but I now know how to do it and can get better.

Thanks a lot mbridge.

Krets, that's a good link you got there. How did you find it? I tried looking for the main page but it just says 'coming soon'...

ya, looks fine, just work on your liquifying a bit and you'll get a much more realistic result.

Yeah, it's strange, every fire tutorial I've used (about 3) has always had a lot more red in them when they were done, but mine never seemto have it. I follow the steps to the letter. I don't know what I'm doing
but I'm learning

Thanks a lot

Ensa

I made it smaller so it wouldn't take so long to load

Easy fire methode.
1)Make object, lines or text. should be white on black.
2)Rotate 90 degressCW
3)Wind about 3 times
4)Rotate back.
5)Blur useing any one of the blurs you feel like. Adds realism, I use gausian.
6)Change to index color in the color modes.
7)Choose Black Bosy for the index color

When you are done that you can use the Hue/Sat to change the color and the smudge tool to tweak.

Wangenstein: check out the smudge tool. (I believe you get it when you press [r], not sure though. it's the button with the icon with the hand with the finger. ) It basically does the same thing as the liquify options used in the tutorial. smudge may be a little slow at times, though.

That's a good point, Mahjqa. And, I've been practicing with the Smudge tool recently. Hmmm...

BTW, I wanted to thank you for posting that animated flame tut (in another thread somewhere). I'm practicing that, too. My first efforts look kinda awful right now, but I can see where they're going in the right direction...

Thank you! I find the smudge tool really useful... I'm not really in control when it's about liquify so I prefer the smudge tool insted..

try inverting the dodged layer for an awsome effect.... also, if you're gonna do that double the that layer right on top of itself- it's like super-extra brite!

Smudge tool is great. I forgot to mention that I used it for to touch up the final image.
