Hey what the hell are those cel-shade graphics...I seen some games starting to use 3D graphics that look like 2D...can anyone explain how they work?!

you mean these comic-like graphics that behave like 3d?
hmmm. i think there are special plug-ins for professional renderers to do this.

would be interesting if such an effect could be achieved with pov.

Well there is a plugin for MAX that is called Illutstrate. You can save as an flash- outline, cellshade or 3d-object.
I think it is aviable for other 3d-progs to but not pov.

Heh!
Found Max tutorial page http://www.3dlinks.com/tutorials_max.cfm searching google for "cell-shading"+povray

You can achieve a sort of cel shading, using photoshop actions, and batch processing.

I set up a render with only a few lights and some ambient light to keep the tones simple, then render the animation to single frame. Then set up a photoshop action perhap using posterize, maybe add an artistic effect or two, and detect edges or trace contour with a nice black edge.

I have played the a similar method using adobe stream line, to vectorize the image and then saving to flash.

I have with in the last week seen someone doing some cel shading tests with POV, You might what to check the news server: news.povray.org

Thankyou olssonE! That is an awesome link! I've been wondering how to do stuff liek this myself. I have a copy of Brazil, but I don't know how to use the cartoon shader. I should look into that. But aweomse techniqes for getting similar effects... wow.. I never thought about using the falloff before, but seriously, the one olssonE found is golden. That will work for any of you guys using POV.
Oh, and nice sig warjournal. I havn't seen that one yet. Good job.

Shine and shine.
