Ok, i'm an exception because I have a static IP, but what about all of those
with dynamic IP's ....are you going to start banning ISPs and domains?
What about anonymizer and 10 other spoofing services that are free?

Why not just ignore the trolls and fuckwits....they will invariably move somewhere else

The cable internet provider in my area (Vancouver, WA) runs half of the cities IP Adresses. Now, I'm not going to start pointing fingers, but I have a very good idea of who is posting under the name of OzoneLeader_hi. But, the problem is, you will get the same IP adress from everyone in eastern Vancouver.

Someone who spoofs their IP, or hides behind a proxie, for the sole purpose of being a jerk? Well, in that situation, they have many deeper problems to worry about than us "exposing" them as losers.

I'm aware of the problems involved with dynamic IPs. I'm still going to continue logging things though, (I'll have to make the "iploggged" thing less ugly!) There are things I can do to people once I know more about their IP and where they come from, things other than banning. (Mostly of the "giving shit" variety! Heh.) If I really needed to, I've dealt with SysAdmins before, and if I know the dynamic IP and the exact time of the connection I can have them run the logs and tell me who exactly was using it at that moment. This would be a major pain in the ass for me, but I *could* do it, and will if these racist problems continue. Hopefully just having people know that I can do this will make the problem stop.

Does logging the IP also log the server data...cause in that case you cna contact them legally and ask them as to who was using this IP at this time (usually it's best to give them the time in GMT). They can give you relevant information, and they can also block that ueer from coming to this site.

Remember this? A guy or gal at AOL once revealed an identity to someone
identifying themselves as navy or something. The AOL person
revealing the identity was terminated (if i recall) and the whole thing
caused a scandal....ISPs are not allowed to reveal customer ID's unless
there is a serious breach ---child porn, criminal activities, unfunny jokes, ripping off eyeball-design, etc. - and if they do they can only reveal it to the proper authorities.

It's your call guys, just remember the legal implications. Not to metion you are most probably dealing with minors which the law protects..

christ, in my neck of the woods minors actually haved killed people ( a priest and his wife) and then were given a very harsh slap on the wrists - i'd put the lil bastards away forever.

but keep in mind freedom of speech and privacy issues...there's a fine line. I've read many posts here from respected posters which i felt were incredibly racist or offensive. where do you draw the line?

OK, I didn't even read your whole post, but I know what button I pushed. The fact is, that I can't *legally* ask them for this information. But! I can use my influence as a old fart in the 'net community to get a SysAdmin to give me this information, or simply to allow him to go and dicipline his own user in his own way. Law and legality is important, but don't you forget it, the internet is held together more by people who just give a shit than it is by lawyers! That's what I *meant* to say when I posted [whatever nonsense] I might have posted. So! If I run across any really blatant abuses in the system (this or any other), I'll just do what I always do, talk to the guys who really make things go, and between us we'll do the right thing.

So relax! We don't live in a police state. We live in a system governed by *anarchy*. Welcome to the internet.
